Sources say #Geely Group and #NIO will hold a signing ceremony in Hangzhou at 8 a.m. tomorrow to seal a major strategic cooperation agreement.
Based on available information, the cooperation may cover several key areas:
First, upgraded cooperation on NIO Power’s battery swap business. The two parties are expected to further integrate their battery swap systems, enable cross-brand vehicle compatibility for battery swapping and share battery swap station resources, expanding the reach of NIO’s battery swap network. The two companies have already carried out preliminary cooperation in battery swapping previously.
Second, commercial rollout of the Shenji autonomous driving chip. NIO’s self-developed Shenji AD chip may be supplied for use in Geely vehicles. This would mark the large-scale external supply of NIO’s in-house chip business and serve as a landmark case of self-developed autonomous driving chips from a Chinese automaker being exported to other OEMs.
In addition, sources note that deeper forms of collaboration between the two firms are not ruled out.
William Li said #NIO now operates 4,125 battery swap stations. With each station storing approximately 2,000 kWh of battery energy, they can form an 8 GWh energy storage network serving vehicle owners and society at large.
Each swap station is essentially a distributed energy storage unit and theoretically has the hardware foundation to participate in grid peak shaving and valley filling.
NIO’s Xingxingxia off-grid solar-storage battery swap station in Xinjiang has achieved a closed loop of “PV generation – local storage – energy replenishment via battery swapping,” validating the feasibility of deploying battery swapping plus energy storage in remote areas.
