At 47, I started a toy company. No toy experience. A recession just beginning. Inspired.
I grew it to £2.4m, then lost it in a boardroom coup.
Six years later, I started again.
Today I run Konomocha. No shareholders. No board. Nobody to stab me in the back except me.
For anyone who’s moved abroad: does leaving home make you feel free or guilty? For me, it’s both. Forty years on, still both.
At 25, I was a trained chef working as a head waiter in Welwyn Garden City.
Then hotels. Then selling frozen fish. Then Hitachi.
Today, I sell toys.
People say it’s a strange CV. It isn’t. It’s all one job. You make people want something they didn’t know they needed.
At 25, I said goodbye to my grandparents on a station platform in France. Six months in England to learn English, then a job on a cruise ship.
The ship never showed up.
Today I run a toy sales agency from Bangkok.
That was 40 years ago. The six months is running late.
