🚨BREAKING: The American Anthropological Association the Canadian Anthropology Society have cancelled the panel "Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby: Why biological sex remains a necessary analytic category in anthropology" scheduled to take place at their annual conference. The reasons given for the cancellation was that the panel conflicted with their values, compromised "the safety and dignity of our members," and diminished the program's "scientific integrity." They claimed the ideas the panel was planning to advance (i.e., sex is a real and scientifically important biological variable) would "cause harm to members represented by the Trans and LGBTQI of the anthropological community as well as the community at large." The AAA and CASCA have vowed to "undertake a major review of the processes associated with vetting sessions at our annual meetings" to ensure that such discussion panels about the reality and importance of sex will not be approved in the future.

You have a meeting with the CMO of your hospital. You get 1 request and the administration has to make it happen. What is your request? You can’t ask for more money. Anything else is fair game.

This is the type of doctor @UHC employs as a “medical director.” This person is denying medical claims in the year 2023.

Overheard a university student say “Arctic Monkeys were my dad’s favourite band when I was little.” The passage of time is relentless, unfathomable, cruel, and unforgiving.

One of the greatest organizers from the 1990s, Tim Schermerhorn, just passed away from kidney failure. Tim’s a socialist and rank-and-file transit worker from @labornotes board and NYC’s militant reform New Directions caucus @TWULocal100. Read about him below. Rest in Power 🙏✊
"If your union is ready, you do not follow the conventions of every negotiation; you do not follow the limits set by bosses, union traditions, or the state," writes longtime New York City transit worker and TWU Local 100 activist Tim Schermerhorn. labornotes.org/2022/04/life-…

MISADVENTURES IN AMERICAN HEALTHCARE 1. Doctor orders scan that's clearly indicated for patient & which they've had many times before (allowing for apples-to-apples comparison) 2. Despite order weeks in advance, receive denial day-before from insurer without any explanation

this is wild
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The chart shows huge changes in the number of medical administrators that are not reproducible looking at alternative sources of similar data. This is most likely because they combined multiple data sources and the definition of "administrator" changed around 1992. marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolu…

We're in the middle of a giant machine learning surge, with ML-based "classifiers" being used to make all kinds of decisions at speeds that humans could never match: ML decides everything from whether you get a bank loan to what your phone's camera judges to be a human face. 1/

I just realized my non-US friends probably don't know how US insurance works. So lets say your employer offers insurance. They pay a portion and then you pay a portion. For a family, the employee pays on average about $400 per pay cycle, or $10,400 per year.

The average U.S. worker with family coverage pays $5,969 towards employer-based health insurance, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation 2021 Employer Health Benefits Survey. kff.org/health-costs/r….
