A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE nytimes.com/2026/10/23/us/po…

What do you say to your family when you don’t know if you’ll ever see them again? In February 2022, he told his wife and children the war had begun. Then he left as Russian forces advanced towards Kyiv, unsure what the coming hours would bring. This is President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Before politics, he built a successful career in Ukrainian television as a writer, producer and performer, even portraying a president on screen. In 2019, he was elected President of Ukraine. Three years later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Sitting down with him was surreal and an enormous responsibility. It was a rare chance to hear his account of the first hours of the war and the decisions that followed. We discussed things like: How he found out Russia had invaded. Why he refused an offer to evacuate Kyiv. The 64km Russian military convoy advancing towards the capital. How Russian forces tried to capture a key airport. His account of discovering hundreds of bodies after Russian occupation. What he believes it will take to end the war. But I also wanted to understand how he’d been coping. One of my first questions was simply, “How are you doing?” His answer was: “It’s hard.” He spoke about meeting parents whose children had been killed. Some, he explained, simply ask him for a hug. And as he spoke, there were tears in his eyes. Whatever your views on the war or the decisions made by those involved, this is a rare opportunity to hear his account of events that have changed millions of lives. Because behind every map, every headline and every political decision, there are real people. Out now on all platforms ❤️👊🏾 (President Zelenskyy was recorded in Ukrainian and dubbed in English.)

India’s copper demand grew 12% to 2.1 million metric tons in the year to March 2026, outpacing the country’s 7.7% GDP growth. Data centers made up less than 1% of it, according to the International Copper Association India. Infrastructure led instead, rising 29% and accounting for 22% of domestic consumption. Automotive demand rose 14% after a sluggish FY2025. Growth accelerated from 9.3% the year before. Source: ICA India via The Economic Times

Venezuela's state-owned oil company PdV is working to appoint a new board of directors for US refiner Citgo and its parent company PdV Holdings, a lawyer for the company said today. "The real PdV authorities are working to effectuate their appointment" of a new board of directors to PdV Holdings and Citgo, attorney Katherine Wellington said at a hearing of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "US recognition of President [Delcy] Rodriguez's government means that that the real PdV authorities now appear before this court." #oott argusmedia.com/en/news-and-i…

The shock of oil prices at a five-month high of $110 a barrel and gas prices in Asia and Europe hitting their highest levels since December 2022 is making its mark on household budgets. As well as raising the costs of transport and heating, it adds to pressure on food, clothing and packaging prices and contributes to elevated levels of inflation and borrowing costs reut.rs/4dQSeUW

China’s copper cathode premium soared to an all time record high of $158 per tonne today. At a time when the market is questioning copper demand linked to AI capex deployment, the world’s largest copper consuming economy, BY A MILE, is signaling that it is starving for material. With the majority of global exchange stocks sitting in the US, China is sending an extremely strong signal of tight physical availability, showing it is willing to pay up to ensure metal is brought into the country.

NEW: Rosneft deep dive by Bloomberg News + Officials at Russia’s largest oil producer are concerned that even a few more months of the war with Ukraine could leave lasting damage across the business. + One of Rosneft’s biggest refineries, Ryazan, has been shut for more than half the time since it was first hit by Ukraine in May and has run well below full capacity when operating, according to damage assessments seen by Bloomberg. + Another, Syzran, has spent much of the past six months either completely shut or operating at less than a third of capacity, according to data reviewed by Bloomberg. The Tuapse refinery has been offline since April. + Ukraine is conducting repeat strikes on the refineries as soon as repairs are completed or nearing completion. The need to repeatedly repair damaged equipment is straining operations and causing costs to pile up to levels that Rosneft officials have privately warned cannot be sustained long-term. + Some plants have deliberately slowed repairs as a result, stretching work that should take days into weeks, according to people familiar with the matter. + Efforts to protect the facilities with shipping containers, nets and steel cables have proved ineffective against swarms of drones, company plans show. + The damage is particularly difficult to repair when strikes hit complex secondary units, whose parts would previously have been sourced from the West. It means relying on Russian-made copies and Chinese imports that can take months to obtain and are not always compatible with existing machinery. + It’s put Rosneft into financial trouble. Even before the ramping up of Ukraine’s drone campaign, the company saw a “perfect storm” for its finances. Since then, its profits are down and debt is rising despite what should have been a big windfall from the Iran war. + Moscow Credit Bank, which is linked to Rosneft, is showing signs of distress with $8 billion of problem loans. It highlights how both Russia’s energy and banking sectors are coming under strain at the same time, a dynamic causing concern to Russian finance officials. Xinhua: "The NDRC said Tuesday it will work with relevant departments to expand domestic demand with greater force and more effective measures. Due to challenges such as the deepening impact of external shocks, an imbalance of strong supply and weak demand at home, and pronounced sectoral divergence, further measures will be taken to rev up the economy, according to the official." english.news.cn/20261020/669…
