There are over 30,000 individuals incarcerated in NY's prison system. On Friday, I joined my future colleagues and @communities_ny @CCA_NY at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison for women. We talked to a number of women who have been sentenced to die behind bars, and witnessed resilience and hope in the face of dire circumstances.
Our current sentencing laws do not take into account the human capacity for change and redemption. That must change.

Antoine Galloway was sexually assaulted by a guard at NY’s infamous Clinton Prison. When he filed a grievance, other guards beat him with a deadly weapon & locked him in solitary. A decade on, he’s home working at a shelter, but still has severe pain. The guards were never fired.

“DOCCS ignored reports like these for decades before they tortured and murdered Robert Brooks,” said HALT’s Anisah Sabur. “Rather than more reports, we need urgent action to expand pathways to release from these racist & deadly prisons, and an immediate end to all abuses inside.”

NY prisons are facing a crisis of racist brutality, torture, and death. A person is dying nearly once every two days.
@GovKathyHochul must finally implement the #HALTsolitary Law, expand pathways for release from incarceration, and end all prison abuse.

We’re also going to deliver a card to Governor Hochul laying out our demands and listing the names of 120 people who died in NY state prisons in 2026 so far.

Judge Jenny Rivera's reappointment—or the selection of her successor—could shape whether the court continues to hear criminal appeals and meaningfully considers the experiences of people directly affected by the legal system.
