The Steam page was badly outdated, so I refreshed it with new screenshots, new descriptions and a quick gameplay showcase.
Wishlist if you feel like it, but you don't have to click through, I posted the same video here anyway: store.steampowered.com/app/3…
Music by @JosephComposer really brought it to life.
Had to learn a bit of video editing on the way, another skill I didn't ask for. #indiedev
“Nothing is so useful or so beautiful as order.” Xenophon
Camp tools improvment.
-Mustering ground tool picks the largest possible area automatically, or you can drag the range.
-When placing structures, yellow highlights objects whose path to the boat would get blocked
-Fatigue and equipment wear went in recently too, but that’s for another post #indiedev
“By concord small things grow, by discord the greatest fall apart.” Sallust
Individual AI was necessary to make the whole thing work. The commander is not always in control, it’s not only about routing.
-Next to morale, unit has cohesion with its own squad
-Too much spread, a critical hit and other events can turn your warrior unresponsive
-In the clip the spacing got too loose, morale is fine, so they simply walk back toward the banner
-Restore formation order calls everyone back in line restoring cohesion back

Working on UI systems and formation management:
-The global wounded indicator shows weak spots in the formation at a glance, No no need clicking through
-Individual info is still there, health indicator and card
More coming, working on morale and cohesion.

“Do not put all your goods in hollow ships.” Hesiod
Cargo and space on the ship was waiting a long time to be addressed. So I put in one consistent system:
-Cargo space usage works differently per type, ex: silver coins almost nothing, timber a lot.
-Draught is visible in the portrait UI, the ship shows how deep it sits
-All of it feeds into sailing parameters
-Thrown goods float on the water as pickups

“All warfare is based on deception.” Sun Tzu
Added pseudo ray traced field of view:
-An enemy around the corner is a worse surprise than one you saw coming, positioning can be life/death.
-Works both ways. You can use cover to ambush or slip past.
"No man ever steps in the same river twice." Heraclitus
After drawing endless animation tiles (14 frames one side) i moved to shaders. Wind direction, wave height and so on are parametric now, which opens the door to more weather conditions. With tiles that was just impossible. #indiedev
I've lost count of the menu screens I posted here, but each one beats the last. #indiedev
Building settings and shortcuts, turns out there are 60 action buttons in total.
To sail is necessary, to live is not.
Opening scene example:
I'm working on quests and story, which pushed me into adding a few more UI elements. The hero popup works also as a foldable portrait, which turned out handy.
Our ship got separated from the rest of the fleet, which stopped at Alalia on Corsica.

Small treat for myself:
Ancient Greek Oikos typology study #pixelartㅤ
Will be used for city painting.
I said once that optimization is boring, but it doesn't have to be. #indiedev
Stress test with 180 hoplites. Screen recording took its toll too, but the goal is 300 units at a steady 60 FPS.
An arrow once loosed never comes back.
Back to the core, polishing battle orders:
+Switching formation lets you avoid friendly fire. A clean angle on the enemy can still end up hitting a random unit of yours when the shot misses.
+Added a foldable battle event log

"Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it." Publilius Syrus

+City have stock market with daily barter deals.
+Navigation in towns is clicking straight on the locations
+I added early braking for boats, they row backwards, since I kept missing the dock lol
Music by: xitter.cf/JosephComposer - city have it own theme.
"You know a pilot in a storm." — Seneca

Added more real physics:
+Without direction, the ship drifts by own momentum.
+More speed, wider turn.
+Orders adjust to where the ship can actually go.
-Still only 4 animation directions. Want 8. Big job.
-More weather coming.
