Update on the Tangaliya Project from our partner weavers in Surendranagar, Gujrat. They have started the work and I am getting the first full length sample of the fabric this week. Once the sample is here and we approve it, I will be sending a fitting glider shirt to everyone who has ordered the tangaliya for their fit confirmations before we work on actual shirts for them. We expect to start getting the batch pieces to make the tangaliya shirt for the orders in another 2 weeks or so. Thinking to have the option for Fleming as well as Jack. Maybe Fletcher or Conrad too if the fabric weight and thickness is apt for it.

The ready yarns have now reached the weavers and are currently being rolled onto cones/cylinders in preparation for weaving. This is a surprisingly time consuming step when working with handmade 20/S Kala cotton handspun yarn. Unlike industrial yarns, which are produced directly onto cones and are ready to use, handspun and hand-dyed yarn comes in lacchas (skeins) and has to be carefully wound onto cones first. The delicate handspun yarn also tends to break quite frequently during this process because of the tension, so it can take a few weeks to get everything ready for the loom. The weavers are currently finishing another consignment and have assured me that they will begin our production by the end of August. We should hopefully start receiving the first few pieces in September, with the full production expected to be completed by the end of October. This project has definitely taken longer than I initially anticipated. But given that there are only a handful of weavers handling the entire demand of Tangaliya being produced worldwide; and an even smaller number who can work with the particularly delicate handspun Kala cotton yarn, I can't really complain. It’s slow, but it’s moving. And I’m very much looking forward to finally seeing these pieces come together.
This is finally coming together. The yarns are now in the last stage of dyeing and will soon be on their way to the Tangaliya weavers in Surendranagar who would then work on the fabric.

Merino is probably the best fabric for the monsoon. It doesn’t easily catch those ugly damp smell and also regulates the temperature beautifully. @wanderingraptor was kind enough to ping me when he got his hands on a beautiful blend of merino and tencel (80-20). This is in about 180 gsm and fine micron yarn, so it doesn’t clamp to the skin. Now merino is wool, so it does have slight prickliness to it. Fine micron reduces it and tencel also adds softness, but one would still feel it a bit. So, to make it better, we have lined all high contact zones (collars and yoke) with fine supima pique. The supima pique adds soft feel to these areas without compromising on the breathability. I learnt my lesson with Tangaliya on launching only after procuring the fabrics more so if it’s speciality fabrics. So I have got a small batch of this fabric in-house, probably enough for about 30 of these. DM me for the passcode or checkout the collectibles section on the website if you already have one :)
I think it was @wanderingraptor who infected me with the Merino for Monsoon meme virus. The rains have not stopped for a few days here in Mumbai and dressing for this weather can be a challenge. Cotton gets wet and clings to your body, makes you colder. It is very humid outside and the moment you step into an air conditioned place it is instantly dry and cold. Cabs too. But I have powerful friends who build stuff so I bounced the idea of a 100% merino Rugby but in a breathable knit and comfortable to wear with @is_rajvardhan . I told him I did not want to look like I was going hiking when wearing merino. After he was done reminding me that I sent him on a multi month journey for the Tangaliya shirt, that he is still working on, he jumped into action. Found the fabric from Pravin and cut a rugby full sleeve to my size. Added a Supima pique heavy shirt collar to make it stand out and ensure that the wool does not chafe against the neck and decollate. It also makes it smart casual. I just wore it outside and it is magic. This is the shirt I will be wearing in the rain. It is cool outside and warm inside, it breaths and more importantly does not stick to body and cold when wet because wool is awesome like that. I manifested this into existence. Raj has christened it The Huxley and is rolling out a limited run of 30 pieces because that’s all the fabric he has. Merino for monsoon. Heh. Who would have thought it would work so well.

Dear Tangaliya pre-order customers, Your shirt is not a shirt yet. Right now it's yarn. Hanging in a dyer's workshop, absorbing colour strand by strand. The same hands that will determine how your shirt looks are working on it today. We wanted you to see this part. — LAYER

What fascinates me here is the choice of placket. This seems to be a seamless placket and the only way to be confident about wearing this without messing it up is to get it custom made. I explain why. Traditional french plackets that hide the buttons carries a visible single seam, but this one is different and how. The upper side of placket has double fold of fabric, where the inner folds have the buttonholes to hold the buttons. The entire placket is concealed with probably just 2 stitches one at the top near the collar (visible if one sees closely) and one at the bottom I assume. And yes, to clarify, if someone was to pull the shirt apart from the mid region, the folded fabric of the placket would expose itself and the buttons too. It would also need to carefully ironed back into its original fold after every wash. The only way to wear this shirt right is to get it custom made, like Kamal sir, more so if you are getting it in a fabric like linen. Standard sizes will also open up the placket and expose the folded fabric if someone with a paunch sits wearing this.
Rule of thumb: Every overdressed person has an underdressed best friend.

Then get it tailored. Ready made shirts would never be able to be as good as custom made shirts. Everyone has different proportions and bone structure. Brands I recommend is luxire and @thelayerproject and in ready made selected India, Uniqlo, M&S.
