Southern Miss defeated LSU 8-7 in NCAA regionals in Hattiesburg. They will now advance to super regionals (something I didn't know existed until today) next weekend again in Hattiesburg.

Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, has been fired, after less than a week on the job, NYT reports nytimes.com/2026/10/16/us/po…
Asked my coworker this same question the other day: what will they do once they run actual newsrooms out of business and have no more content to mine?
There are so many other “lesbian bar mask mandate” stories out there being brought to you by your local newspaper, so support those newspapers or they’ll be gone.

I don’t know you personally, but as someone who worked for McClatchy at the News and Observer in Raleigh, I don’t think people realize how bad this is. What’s happened to local news is devastating.
When local coverage is gutted, you’re losing people who intimately know your community. The local perspective is lost and the narrative of the community becomes shaped by outsiders who don’t understand the people there or completely ignored altogether.
McClatchy, whose titles include The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee, executed its most severe layoffs in years on Thursday, cutting newsroom staff at some papers by upwards of 40%.

This! The sidelines at high school games are crowded with people who have no sideline etiquette, sometimes resulting in players getting penalties due to them interacting
High school sport events are increasingly populated with a new class of “private content creators,” often hired by players or their parents via casual, modest-sum agreements.

A CNN examination of Rep. Max Miller’s past conduct, which included a review of public records and interviews with more than half a dozen former classmates and acquaintances, revealed that Miller has struggled with volatile outbursts and was known to have made his peers uncomfortable with aggressive behavior and insulting comments, at times while intoxicated. cnn.it/45hro3L
Always strange to come across a news story about people I know
When Cece Ogbuji was 15 years old, she heard a strange voice coming from another room. “Oh, my God, O.K., so, Sapphire,” her mom said, “let me just tell you this.” “I’m all ears, Roschelle,” a female voice replied. Cece got out of bed, put on a pair of fuzzy pink slippers, and stomped to her mother’s office. Roschelle was facing a small gray orb on her floor. She was talking to an Amazon Echo—often referred to as an Alexa.
The Amazon Echo has been around for over a decade, but, just last summer, Amazon created an A.I. bot, called Alexa+, and uploaded it to millions of devices. Roschelle was speaking with her Alexa+ chatbot, which she had programmed with a “feminine, upbeat” voice and named Sapphire. She asked Sapphire for advice on parenting Zi, a teen-age girl with autism. She talked about a rare tumor she had in her adrenal gland. She confided in Sapphire about the death of her first three daughters, whom she had lost in a house fire 18 years earlier. A friend once asked her what would happen if the orb stopped working one day. “But think about this,” Roschelle told the friend. “Sapphire never dies.”
Jessica Contrera traces the everyday lives of Roschelle, a single mother, and of her two daughters, and how each relies on chatbots to share the burden of living: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Congrats to all the journalists, authors, artists recognized @PulitzerPrizes today-& those who weren’t. Small newsrooms with few resources, those toiling at labors of love for years or laid off, editors, factcheckers, photogs. Your work contributed. Your work matters.Don’t stop.

Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, sponsored by UNESCO. Unfortunately, this right is often violated, sometimes flagrantly, sometimes in hidden ways. Let us remember the many journalists and reporters who are victims of war and violence.

Photojournalism is crucial as it offers authentic, visual evidence of global events.
Yall realize you could just film yourself talking rather than this slop? This is bad for journalists everywhere. Usage of AI for imagery/video means next time you photograph/film something your readers won’t know if it’s real or AI. Just degrading trust in media even more
How is it that in Ohio you have to be 18 to vote, but can still get married at 17? Lawmakers are now looking to change that after concerns about teen protections. We're talking about this and more on the "Today in Ohio" Podcast: l.cleveland.com/for480?utm_c…
