The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is set to make train journeys faster, more frequent, and greener between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, on a more reliable and cleaner railway. 🚆 With 70 miles of track being electrified, it’s estimated that TRU will reduce the amount of carbon used to operate the railway by 6 million tonnes over the next 60 years. Which is the same as taking 6 million cars off the road for a year! ⚡️🌱 TRU will also be creating over 8,000 jobs during construction, along with 590 apprenticeships and engaging with over 100,000 young people through an education programme. Watch Team TRU successfully remove the old railway bridge at Common Lane in Church Fenton last weekend using a remote-controlled SPMT! 🕹️🎥 This was the first major stage to replace this life-expired structure with a new bridge high enough to accommodate the overhead line equipment needed to power faster, greener, quieter electric trains in the future. The new bridge will be installed on 17/18 October, when trains between Leeds and York will be diverted, and between 24 October-1 November, when direct buses between Leeds and York will be in place. Buses calling at local stations in between will also run on these dates. For full travel information visit nationalrail.co.uk. ℹ️

A BNG milestone for TRU 🙌 TRU has completed the purchase of 26 biodiversity units from Leeds City Council to support enhancements at two local woodland sites. The programme's target of 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG) is a core part of the TRU sustainability strategy – with the aim of leaving the natural environment in a measurably better state than before construction began. Located just 500m from the Transpennine route, the woodland will benefit from a 30-year habitat creation & management programme funded entirely by TRU; this will improve species richness, diversity and abundance through targeted felling, enrichment planting and tree veteranisation. This is also the country's 10th largest biodiversity purchase to date.🌲 To mark the success, TRU met with Councillor Katie Dye from Leeds City Council at the site to see firsthand the work already underway and receive a detailed briefing on what’s to come. 🔗 Read more here: networkrailmediacentre.co.uk…

We welcomed the leadership of Kirklees Council to Huddersfield station last week, to see our ongoing improvement works firsthand and discuss the benefits TRU is bringing to rail users and local communities across the region. 🤝 Their visit provided an opportunity to highlight the transformational impact TRU is having on regeneration in Huddersfield, away from the tracks. A recent Network Rail-commissioned study found that planning applications within 1.5 miles of the station have increased by nearly 33% since TRU funding was confirmed in 2020, and planned construction value in the area has almost tripled. Huddersfield is one of the most significant sites across the TRU footprint - the work at the station and this wider stretch of railway will deliver a once-in-a-generation transformation that will not lot only improve connectivity, but help drive economic growth and investment in the town. 📈
