And Ukrainians will be carrying out violent acts of resistance towards its Russian occupiers in perpetuity (ala Gaza). Will you stand up for their cause like you do the Palestinians, @ggreenwald?

“we will pay any price….to assure the success and survival of liberty.” Is this still true? Do we prize liberty or do we prize power and purse? No more clear test than the choice between Ukraine and Russia. Abandon Ukraine and we abandon liberty. Eventually even our own.

ART IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN POLITICS
From Swift to Moliere to Dostoyevsky artists have been warning for ages that being Very Sure to the point of claiming to know how other people should behave is a 100% predictor of jackassery:

Overnight, the Russians used 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones and loitering munitions against our energy and critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv. A targeted Russian ballistic missile strike specifically against energy infrastructure – the very infrastructure covered by the ceasefire announced by the American President. The strike was entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale – Russia has never before shown such ostentatious disrespect toward the United States. Russia does not consider the American President’s statements strong. Unfortunately, at least 600,000 people are now without power. Outages could become even more widespread. Unfortunately, there is significant damage to facilities and equipment – at 26 facilities of our power system and four facilities in the oil and gas sector. I am grateful to the repair crews, all Ukrainian energy workers, and the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for all their efforts to address the aftermath of this Russian strike. Tragically, there have been fatalities and injuries.
We ask America and EVERYONE in the world who does not turn a blind eye to reality to respond – and to respond forcefully. Russia has squandered the opportunity for de-escalation and has clearly chosen to continue its insane war of annihilation. We ask President Trump to impose STRONG sanctions on Russia, especially since the Lindsey Graham bill, which was recently passed and signed into law, authorizes and regulates such measures. The American President has all the effective and necessary tools to bring peace closer through strength, justice, and pressure on the aggressor. We ask for additional packages of Patriot missile interceptors for Ukraine. It is entirely fair for us to tell the United States, Europe, and all our partners that no country in the world should be left alone to face such a deranged and pro-war actor as Russia. I am grateful to everyone who helps Ukraine! Peace can only come through strength, and we ask America to remember this principle of Reagan’s. Glory to Ukraine!

It's hard for me to believe that, at a time when the Russians continue to bring misery and destruction to the people of Ukraine, we would even consider giving them an economic lifeline by buying their diesel fuel. This has to stop.

Here’s the real question: Why don’t you turn on Starlink over Russia so the Ukrainians can take out Russian ballistic missile launchers? One small action and you immediately save children from dying every day. Refusing to do so is like watching your friend die while you hold his EpiPen over him. It’s that simple.

Today President Xi will attempt to give false hope of a more cooperative relationship with the US while continuing to fund Russia’s war against Ukraine, support Iran in the war against us, and continue cyber attacks on America. Presidents in the past have been naive when it comes to China. We have to learn from past mistakes with China and be clear eyed about their continued aggression against the US and our allies.

I kept hearing that Pope Leo XIV was “far left,” and for a while I assumed there must be some truth to it.
Then I started actually listening to him.
Not clips. Not political commentary. Not somebody telling me what I was supposed to think about him. His speeches. His words. His teaching.
And I have completely changed my opinion of him.
On immigration, he has acknowledged that a country has the right to control its borders. But he does not stop there. He has also told immigrants that entering another country comes with responsibilities. Learn the language. Respect the laws. Learn the customs. Participate in the life of the community.
That struck me because it is neither “open borders” nor a rejection of the immigrant. It is order and responsibility alongside human dignity.
Then there is abortion.
Pope Leo has been absolutely clear that the right to life begins at conception and continues until natural death. In his encyclical, he specifically named induced abortion and euthanasia among choices the Church considers gravely wrong.
And now, as he prepares to go to France, where abortion has been placed in the constitution and assisted dying has advanced into law, the central theme of his visit is essentially a defense of human life: “That the world may have life.” (AP News)
Then listen to what he tells young people.
Stop being afraid of commitment.
Stop being afraid of your vocation.
Stop being afraid of marriage.
When speaking to hundreds of thousands of young people in Spain, he congratulated couples preparing for marriage and told them plainly: “You don’t have to be afraid to get married and start a family.”
In a culture constantly telling young adults to delay marriage, delay children, chase themselves first and keep every option open forever, hearing the Pope tell young people that marriage and family are something beautiful enough to embrace instead of fear hit me hard. (National Catholic Register)
The more I listen to Pope Leo, the more ridiculous our political labels start to look.
Borders matter.
Laws matter.
The unborn matter.
Migrants matter.
Marriage matters.
Families matter.
Human dignity matters.
None of those things cancel the others out.
That is Catholicism.
I thought I had Pope Leo figured out before I really listened to him.
I was wrong.
And honestly, the more I hear from him, the more I love this Pope.

Ted. Look at our deficit. Look at how much we pay in interest every minute of every day. Look what that is doing to interest rates.
It’s Econ 101, you either have to raise revenue significantly, cut spending, significantly. Or both.
Talarico committed to support the Break Up Big Medicine Bill. That was a pre requisite for my doing the event with him this week.
If this Hawley/ Warren bill passes, we would reduce the deficit. We would cut costs for patients. Drug pricing would drop like a rock.
Yet not a word from you in support Ted. Why ?
A true capitalist would understand how these economics work. They wouldn’t ignore the fact that our debt levels pull money away from business. And consumers.
If you truly want to do what is best for business, and the economy, we are going to have to raise taxes and cut spending.
The best place to cut spending is by removing the HealthCare middlemen that are Too Big To Care, which is exactly what the Break Up Big Medicine Bill does
You ready to whip up support among republicans ? Or do you prefer people dying because they can’t afford care , and the economy continuing to slow down because we are having to print money to financial engineer our debt obligations.
What say you Ted ?
Mark, your second paragraph refutes your first, and your support for James Talarico makes the contradiction even stranger.
You’re right: taxes change behavior. That’s why President Trump cut them. After years of Obama-era stagnation, we rewarded work and investment. Before COVID, unemployment hit a 50-year low and poverty fell to the lowest rate ever recorded.
Last July, every Senate Democrat voted to let a $4 trillion tax increase hit Americans, the largest in history. Now Talarico wants higher taxes, calls capitalism an “oppressive system” to be dismantled, says “God is nonbinary,” says there are “six really common biological sexes,” and wants a “giant welcome mat” at our southern border.
If incentives matter, and they do, why on earth would Texas go backwards?
