#ElNino is coming. Are we ready?
Preparedness means funding action before the shock.

I’ve just taken the stage at the National #Agriculture Conference & Expo #HappeningNow to champion #AnticipatoryAction because when humanitarian assistance is shock-responsive, we don’t have to wait for crisis to strike.

Yesterday in Mutare, I presented the Action Plan on Anticipating the 2026/27 El Niño: Zimbabwe's Preparedness, Response and Recovery at a strategic meeting focused on strengthening our agricultural sector and building a resilient and food-secure Zimbabwe.
Our discussions underscored a critical shift - from responding to drought when it occurs, to anticipating risks and acting early. This requires strong early-warning systems and ensuring weather and climate information reaches farmers timeously.
- We must intensify climate-smart agriculture. Pfumvudza/Intwasa has shown that resilient production systems work, and we must ensure every farmer has the knowledge, inputs and technology to farm productively and sustainably.
- Water is central. We must accelerate irrigation development, expand water harvesting and link water, agriculture, fisheries and energy to reduce dependence on rainfall.
- We must also protect our national herd through disease surveillance, vaccination, tick control and improved feeding and pasture management.
- Research, innovation and technology must remain at the centre - from drought-tolerant varieties and mechanisation to digital tools and drones.
Through planning, innovation, investment and coordinated action, we can build a more productive, resilient agricultural sector that secures food for our nation.

Food can be an employer. A connector. An ambassador.
@terrymap1’s journey from an idea to a popular destination shows what is possible when food systems are done right. Creating jobs, growing businesses and bringing people together, even across language and cultural barriers.

While in Zimbabwe, I took some time to drive about 160 km southwest of Harare to visit @kwaterry1 in Mhondoro-Ngezi. What I found there brought some of the week’s conversations about Africa’s agriculture and food systems down to earth.
Terry Maphosa @terrymap1 started small with road-runner chickens. Today, he has built a farm, market, restaurant and rural resort.
It took almost three years to see the rewards. Agrifood systems can build profitable businesses for young Africans. But it can take time.
Thanks for the conversation Terry!
