Once more unto the breach, dear Kopites, once more;
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
And the cry of ‘Young Man’ goes up;
There’s no need to feel down;
Have modest stillness and humility;
Cry 'God for Harry, England, (we’re Scouse not English) and Saint George!'
YMCA.
And this year’s award for ‘Low Self-Awareness’ goes to ……
One thing that I was very, very grateful for on Sunday was that, while I was sitting inside Anfield—when I thought we were going to win, when the odds were stacked against us after the red card, and then, clearly, after the emphatic defeat—each and every time I looked at the Manchester City supporters, I thought, “Thank God we’re not them.”
There have been moments in the past twenty years when I thought I’d never see Liverpool win the league, and there have been moments when I’ve wished for rich owners like the Manchester City owners. But my God, I’m glad that never happened. I’m glad we’re us, and I’m glad we’re not them. That’s our golden sky this week.
Experiencing biased refereeing & the phoney application of rules must be a terrible thing for poor Stevie. Being excluded from trying to win trophies through no fault of your own must make it even worse.
This is a virtual reality experience of being an Evertonian, Stevie.
That’s a captain talking there and he’s right. He is proof that you can overcome being ineffective by trying as hard as you can. KDH has been awful this season but was very much improved yesterday.
Yes, player trading is a sin qua non of football management & squad churn is a true test of transformation. Ndiaye - reinvestable funds. Branthwaite & Armstrong - squad depletion.
Developing not exploiting profitable assets needs bravery & a strategy of patient evolution.
Brilliant summary.
My tiny contribution:
1 As soon as I saw the regurgitation of the NSNO myth I knew that they didn’t have a proper on-field strategy. Kinnear confirmed it.
2 The post-Man City landscape may benefit us in the process of replacing our current owners.
1. After only 2 summer windows where the squad acquisition cost was barely increased, we sold our best player, ST prices were increased and the club revenue grew very significantly, TFG are bailing -> no other way to put it.
2. Yet, contrast their statement today versus the statements made below, which talk about long term vision, investment and custodianship:
3. Dan Friedkin, December 2024
“I take immense pride in welcoming one of England’s most historic football clubs to our global family, The Friedkin Group. Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honoured to become custodians of this great institution… We are deeply committed to honouring this legacy while contributing positively to the community, economy, and people of this remarkable city.”
4. Marc Watts, December 2024
“We are proud to be the new custodians of your Club. Together, we will usher Everton into a new era, one that is marked by ambition and professionalism. As stewards of Everton, we look forward to showing our commitment to the Club through actions, not words… Our goals are clear: Strengthening the men’s first-team squad through thoughtful and strategic investment… Maximising the potential of the new stadium through long-term commercial partnerships and events that benefit the city of Liverpool… The road ahead of us is long and there will be further challenges to come, but we are committed to living by Everton’s motto: nil satis nisi optimum.”
5. Everton are not doing badly, on and off the pitch. Fans have not done protests like Roma, or gone to any great angry lengths. They have swallowed all the additional costs. They have packed the HD Stadium. Sponsors have flocked in, good players have joined, Everton are on the up.
6. The about turn from TFG is undeniably NOT linked to Everton's own instrinsic progress. We have been demonstrating sound financial and football progress.
7. No question this is linked to something else. My hunch is UEFA Article 5. TFG never really had a suitable structure to solve the dual ownership of Roma and Everton, and gullible journalists put out statements saying they a solution without properly querying how. We also had the laughable Kinnear interview where the owners made it sound like they were driving the club towards a high bar of success in the long term.
8. Everton in TFG's eyes is the easier club to flog equity in, to facilitate the seperation. TFG can retain a minority stake.
9. The value growth in Everton allows them to (a) raise cash from the sale for Roma's stadium build (b) sell the same story about Roma's new stadium to financiers of that stadium using Everton and HD as the template: New stadium->more revenues->equity growth
10. Before TFG bought Everton, their Roma investment was fucked. €1bn sunk with no hope of recovery and an expensive stadium build. Everton have made things alot easier.
11. To conclude, TFG deserve some credit for good work in stabilising Everton's finances. But all good solid owners would have done that.
12. They absolutely failed to back up
their words when they bought the club and in the process sold our best player and left us with a weakened squad.
I for one will not be sad to see the back of these sorry bastards.
New owners will have to undergo strict OADT and compliance to IFR's new licensing regime. So no chance of any charlatans getting near the club. Whoever that new credible owner is, in my opinion, must NOT be creating an Multi Club Ownership (MCO) model.
Have you been hacked?
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.
The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.
But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.
That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.
It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
One for you here @afneil ……
Utter shite.
Badenoch gives the nutshell of her speech at the start: “there is a fight coming in British politics.
...a fight that we have not seen in this country for more than half a
century.
It will be a battle for the soul of this nation...
A battle of ideas...
A battle... that goes to the very core of who we are... and what
kind of country we want to be.
On one side... we have a government that wants to wind back the
clock... to the failed ideas of the past.
They believe economic growth is created... by politicians.
They think government knows best.
They think that your income... your pension... and your savings...
are theirs to take and then hand out as they see fit.
They believe that what they are doing is compassionate... but we
know... that these ideas will make every single person in this
country poorer.
Your taxes will be higher. Your bills will go up. You will find it harder
and harder to make ends meet.
“Sometimes lacked judgement”?!!! What an absolute hypocrite you are.
Very sad to have had to announce the death of my friend Jeffrey Archer on the show last night. A man of talents, flaws, positivity and bouncebackability, with a zest for life. He was a terrific interviewee. He sometimes invited me to his flat on Albert Embankment as he loved political gossip. His trilogy of Prison Diaries remain the best books of the last 20 years on what life is like in prison. He sold 350 million books in 47 languages in 114 countries but the literary cogniscenti always looked down their noses at him. I tried in vain to get him to write his autobiography. Yes, he sometimes lacked judgement, no he never achieved his aim to be a front rank politician, yes he did some bad things. But what a life. What. A. Life. @Jeffrey_Archer
In amongst the accusations of fraud by City’s owners, those first four songs will be belted out without irony.
‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ would have been a great opener.
🍷Cheers.

🎶 60 mill, 60 mill, Illy Ndiaye … Doin’ business the Everton way 🎶
It was actually a shrewd business move by The Friedkin Group to secure the £60m for Ndiaye upfront. Had they agreed to an £85m deal structured over five years, they likely would have never seen the full amount. #EFC
