Terry Davis:
> lives in his car, codes in parking lots
> internet laughs at him while he's alive dies homeless, alone
> now every programmer respects TempleOS as a masterpiece built the impossible while fighting his own mind
recognized only after he couldn't see it
be Terry Davis
> hears voices, decides to build an entire operating system
> writes his own programming language (HolyC) > 1 million lines of code. kernel, compiler, graphics, games, 3D engine. solo.
> WNDows is 50 million lines. TempleOS is 100K. fits on a floppy.

At the edge of genius is madness.
Terry Davis, a schizophrenic programmer, single-handedly built an entire operating system from scratch "TempleOS" including its kernel, compiler, graphics engine.
He built one of the most unique and fascinating pieces of software ever created.
TempleOS is also on TikTok.

TempleOS, an operating system born from the extraordinary vision of a programmer.

Created by Terry A. Davis, a brilliant yet deeply troubled programmer, TempleOS was his attempt to build a modern-day temple for communicating with God. Terry believed God Himself called him to this task, and he poured years of his life into making it happen by creating this operating system and coding language all by himself. In 1996, Terry claimed to have had a series of visions where god spoke to him, instructing him to build TempleOS. He saw the project as a spiritual duty and adhered strictly to what he believed were divine specifications from god, such as using a 640x480 resolution and 16-color display because, in his words, “god said so.”
TempleOS is unlike any other operating system. Entirely coded by Davis himself—around 100,000 lines of code. What truly sets TempleOS apart is its Oracles, a feature Davis described as a conduit for divine communication. Users could ask the system questions and receive seemingly random, scripture-like responses generated by algorithms inspired by the Bible. For Davis, this was not random—it was god speaking directly. Terry was entirely self-taught, mastering programming without formal training. His ability to single-handedly create TempleOS, and even his own programming language (HolyC), speaks to his extraordinary technical skill.
Terry struggled with schizophrenia, which shaped not only his vision for TempleOS but also his life in profound and difficult ways. His unshakable faith in his purpose is both inspiring and haunting, and it makes TempleOS feel like more than just software—it’s a window into a mind seeking meaning, connection, and God Himself. Terry died in 2018 after being struck by a Union Pacific train. His final words in a video published before his death were “It’s good to be king. Wait, maybe. I think maybe I’m just like a little bizarre little person who walks back and forth.”
