Newly freed formerly enslaved people were eager to build networks of learning, commerce, and politics during Reconstruction immediately following the American Civil War. Dr. Thulani Davis, @temne, a prof & a Nellie Y. McKay Fellow in the Afro-American Studies Dept. at @UWMadison, joined host Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, @NewBlackMan, to discuss her latest book, "The Emancipation Circuit: Black Activism Forging a Culture of Freedom," published by @DukePress. #blackstudies youtu.be/FugIgkqmnew

yuri kochiyama was greatly impacted by malcolm x, and the two eventually became close friends, working towards racial solidarity. in 1965, kochiyama was photographed cradling malcom x's head after he was shot. they were both born on this day (may 19th). in this video, their grandchildren discuss their lives and legacies.

I had @temne 's MX photographs book on my coffee table when I lived in Maryland. I also remember her narrative portion of the doc "W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices," a major inspiration for the structure of my #MumiaAbuJamal anthology. dafricapress.com/The-Trials-…
