Once, the British PM decided the fate of nations. Now, he's a Tesco Value Martin Lewis.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

The last 25 years have shown us that the biggest threat to "the whole of society" is its government -- its and its agencies commitments to bizarre ideologies, lofty political projects, their terminal incompetence and total intransigence. So it's a FO from me.

Climate alarmists keep telling us the world is increasingly on fire It is not By August 5, 2026 the world has had the lowest fire emissions ever in the satellite era apps.atmosphere.copernicus.e… You can see all the references in my Twitter thread: xitter.cf/BjornLomborg/status/20…
Alarmists: “World on fire!” Reality: By Aug 5, global burned area likely never lower than 2026 Disasters in France, Spain & Canada are tragic—but climate is global. Cherry-picking isn’t science Climate policy does near-nothing for fires We need better fire policy (prescribed burns, let some burn) and better climate info gwis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/apps/g…

Not true. Not true at all. A cross-party political consensus was engineered, despite popular opinion. That is to say the green agenda allowed the political establishment a way to exclude the public from politics, and that was its appeal. Cost was very clearly immaterial to an agenda that had, since the 1970s very clearly been hostile to economic growth and sought its reversal. Hannan is re-writing the past. But I was documenting it at the time.
⚡ "Net zero was popular in every test of opinion in the early 2000s. People thought it was a good idea because they didn't realise what it was going to cost." @DanielJHannan explains how public support for Net Zero collapsed once people understood the true economic price.

Tim is right, and this is - as ever from Tim - a superbly written article. Climate change is a matter of fact, and the solutions are here. Whether you’re left wing or right wing doesn’t change that. And the solutions are increasingly economically better than the fossil fuel alternatives. Indeed, the capitalist case for action is overwhelmingly compelling. What’s holding us back- or making it expensive- are incumbents and incumbent thinking, now being joined by frankly bizarre ideology. Solar is the cheapest power on the planet. Onshore wind bonkers cheap. It’s undoubtedly the case that EVs are the future. Costs falling (the UK’s cheapest new car is an EV…) Heatpumps are outstanding for most homes. One of my most interesting meetings was with the Net Zero Scrutiny Group discussing how a freer market in electricity could use these technologies to drive down energy costs. Yet we see incumbents lobbying against these - trying to roll back EV targets and claiming we’ll have hydrogen instead of heatpumps. Telling us the solution to fossil fuel crises is more fossil fuels. They resist the changes we need to the market to make renewables slash costs and deny the very evidence in front of their eyes on both climate and technology. Wildfires? “Arson and woke land management” Floods? “Dam removals. Or was it too many dams?” melting glaciers? “Sun spots. Just weather”. Excess O2? “It’s just 0.04% and it’s good for plants” Extreme temperatures? “Just weather” Climate models predicted all of them. A wise person once told me that when people bring a different explanation to every bit of the argument, there’s usually something else. Similarly with solutions. Solar panels? “Plastering the land” and “threatening food security”. Nonsense - they take up 1/3 the land of golf courses and nature loves living under them. Wind farms “kill birds”. Have you seen how many cats kill, buildings, cars? Wind farms are vanishingly low on the list. Or we could do as Tim says. See what’s going on, see the huge opportunity of the solutions and embrace it.

🇬🇧 THEY TOLD YOU A STORY. 🇬🇧 Colonisers. Slavers. Oppressors. And you were supposed to feel ashamed. Not for what you done... But for WHO YOU ARE. 🇬🇧 So we tested it. Britain wrote everything down, so we opened the books. 📖 Turns out fewer than 1 man in 10 could vote in the year Britain banned the slave trade. No woman could. Your ancestors could hang for stealing a sheep, get shipped across the world for petty theft, or go down a mine at 8 years old. In Manchester, the average age of death in a labouring family was 17. They weren't running the slave trade. They were underneath it too. Which is what makes what happened next worth knowing. In 1772 an enslaved man named James Somerset walked free from an English court, because English law couldn't hold a slave. In 1791, 300,000 families just stopped buying slave sugar. No march, no riot, just a decision made at 300,000 kitchen tables. In 1792, 519 petitions carrying 390,000 names hit Parliament, most signed by people who couldn't vote themselves. In 1807, Britain banned the trade. Then the slave owners sent Britain a bill for the 800,000 people they still held. 💷 £20 million. About 40% of the entire government budget at the time. The Treasury says it wasn't paid off until 2015. So if your family paid British tax before then, they helped buy 800,000 people their freedom. From 1808 the Royal Navy spent 60 years hunting slave ships at sea: 1,600 stopped, 150,000 people freed, and 1,600 British sailors dead, mostly of disease, buried thousands of miles from home. ⚓ In 1816 they ended two centuries of Barbary corsairs enslaving Europeans. In 1896 a war that lasted 38 minutes ended slavery in Zanzibar. 🇹🇿 Almost every country on Earth outlaws slavery today. That fight was paid for largely at British expense, by British hands.🇬🇧 So why haven't you heard any of this? Because within living memory, someone rewrote the story. You got taught the crime. Not the cure. The powerful exploited the world. They exploited their own people first. It was those people who ended slavery. 🇬🇧 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ History got rewritten once, in living memory, by no one who was ever named or held to account. We are ordinary people doing what ordinary people have always done. Opening the books. Refusing to look away. This is how we fight back. Fact by fact. Story by story. Name by name. We are the home of British heroes. There is a place for you in it. If you can afford to support what we do: proudofus.co.uk/support Be part of us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧

Replying to @EnvAgency
Dear @EnvAgency. In February this year, after 4 years of asking you to look after the Aldersbrook, I led a team of volunteers to do your job for you & clean out tonnes of silt & leaves, as well as hundreds of bags of rubbish. Through the effort of community volunteers & donations, & at zero cost to the taxpayer, we turned a forgotten silted up ditch back into a river again. Last nights intense rain storm showed why our actions are the very definition of “strengthening water resilience”. A huge amount of rain fell in a short time, but the restored section of the Aldersbrook has been able to hold 100’s of thousands of litres more water, stopping this water running into the Roding, & thereby *reducing* local flood risk. The first photograph below is of the Aldersbrook after the rains this morning- a big contrast to the area before we did the work. Perhaps more importantly, this water, instead of running straight off into the Roding & hence the sea is now being held in the Aldersbrook & gradually released so it can be used by nature. It is feeding marshes, trees & wildlife, topping up groundwater & helping to reduce our flood/drought cycle. If you want to strengthen water resilience, we need thousands more projects like the Aldersbrook around the country. So the question I ask you, Environment Agency, is why you are threatening me with two years imprisonment, rather than offering to meet & discuss how we can work together to restore the Roding & its tributaries, which could become a blueprint for you cooperating with local river guardians nationwide?

The lowest possible expectations celebrated here as a "game changer". The green agenda's advocates claimed that it would create 'green jobs' and 'green growth' and a 'green industrial revolution', and would 'lead the world'. But after thousands of job cuts in Scotland as a direct result of Net Zero policies, they finally get a small slice of the promise: building the fibreglass sheds on top of wind turbines, for a Danish manufacturer, using mostly Chinese parts and materials.
A game changing moment for Scotland and the industrial opportunity we are determined to deliver from the clean power mission. This is Labour delivering for Scotland - jobs, investment, skills and a world leading supply chain to build the power of the future.

The British Establishment has a simple rule: The problem is never the problem. The problem is people who dare to point out the problem. Grooming gangs, illegal immigration, terrorism, men in women's prisons, Net Zero. Same playbook every time: "racist", "denier", "Nazi". You'd think when you're calling a beloved children's author a Nazi, you'd maybe stop and pause. But no. Another part of the rule is that no matter how right the "bad" people turn out to be, they remain tainted by having been right. Feminists like JK Rowling were vilified for opposing puberty blockers being given to children. The government rowed back on the policy. But the women who spoke out against it are still considered bigots. Grooming gangs turned out to be racist anti-white hate crimes. If this had been done by an invading army, it would be rightly treated as a war crime. But the people who covered it up and ignored it are still the "good" people and the people who complained about it are still the "bad" people. The same is true of illegal immigration. Islamism. Net Zero. And this is why the country is screwed. Because we live in a society where the golden rule is that you must tolerate the intolerable or you'll be made a pariah for caring about the safety of British women and girls, for wanting a cohesive society, for wanting a strong economy. I've had enough of this and my sense is so have the British people. We won't keep quiet anymore. Call us all the names you want. It doesn't work anymore.
