Michigan State journalism student Elliott Hammon still has the video Tom Izzo sent him before his brain tumor surgery four and a half years ago.
Hammon brought it up during Izzo’s press conference and asked how it impacts him knowing he means so much to people.
Izzo’s full response:
“It’s better than winning.”
“What people think of you, how you can inspire people. I mean, that’s why I’m here. Some people jump around and go to different jobs. I want to be a part of the fabric of this place, and I want to be a guy that people can come to.
“If that tape, or that video, or phone call helped you… (pounds chest) that’s awesome.”

Gary Myers reveals that Bill Parcells has secretly paid over $4,000,000 to 20 of his former players who were struggling financially because he believed they sacrificed to make him financially secure and there is no better way to spend the money
“Over the years, Parcells had loaned out a total of four million dollars to 20 of his former players who have come to him, I won't say destitute, but certainly having financial hardship.”
“And Bill sat down and wrote checks for about four million dollars, which to me is completely unprecedented in sports. I've never heard of anything like that. And I said, 'Bill, why would you do something like that? Why do you feel obligated?' And he explained to me that he set aside all the money he needs for, hopefully, another 30 years of his life.”
“He just turned 82. And he's given money to his three daughters and to his grandchildren, and then he has a certain amount of money left. And he says, 'What better way is there to do it than if some of my players who gave so much to me and helped make me a Hall of Fame coach and make me financially secure?”
“It was because of their hard work and me driving them to be the best they can be. They gave so much to me. Now that I'm in a position to help, and unfortunately they're in a position where they need help, why shouldn't I be the one to help?'”
“And, you know, people who remember Parcells, there's this hard-driving coach who had a love-hate relationship with his players. And now to see the transformation where he has become the patriarch of that team.”

CHAMPIONS MINDSET
Never complain about something that you’re not willing to change.
Easiest thing in the world to do is to complain, blame, quit, and settle.

Geno Auriemma shares how he explains success to his players and why showing up isn't enough.
"If you go to class and you do average work, you're gonna get a C. That's why it's called average."
"If you want a B, you have to do more work. If you want an A, you have to do even more work and you have to give up stuff."
You get what you earn in life.
"You have to sacrifice. Maybe you can't do all the things that everybody else does."
It means if you want more then you have to be willing to do more.
"If you're just happy getting Bs all your life, there's nothing wrong with that either. But you're never gonna get the satisfaction of what it feels like to get an A."
Then he connected it to basketball:
"If you just wanna be average, then you do average work. If you wanna be a little bit above average then you do a little more work."
"If you wanna get As in basketball, then you gotta do stuff that other people aren't willing to do - especially if you have the talent like we do. We have talent."
It means bring a mindset of excellence to everything that you do. Excellence isn't the goal - it's the standard you set.
Then he called out the entitlement problem:
"Some of these younger guys coming out of high school, man, they wanna show up and go, 'I'm here. Where's my 3.7?'"
"Like my father used to say, 'I got your 3.7 right here.'"
Showing up doesn't earn you anything. Doing the work does.
You get the grade you earn - in school, in basketball, and in life.
It's easy to be average...successful people look to compete in everything they do.

Coach Prime explains fatherhood gave him a chance to make right what was wrong for him
“Trying to make me cry, man. Sometimes, you know what y’all forget? I’m a father. I think y’all forget that.”
“Y’all see a coach, you see Prime, you see someone that has dabbled with success in certain areas of life, someone made a multitude of mistakes as well.”
“But y’all forget, I’m a real loving, caring father, and that’s my son, man. I feel him. I love that, man.”
“I love fatherhood. I love fathering. I really do. I wasn’t fathered like I’m a father. So some people could take the wrong and keep it going wrong.”
“Some people could take the wrong and make it right. I believe in making it right.”
