This is an incredible moment in this history of mathematics, computer science, physics & science with some of the hardest problems in human history being solved by AI over a period of weeks. Depending on your perspective, it's either a crisis, a triumph, or both. I don't think anyone knows for sure. We're all trying to make sense of it. I oscillate between fear/dread and optimism/excitement on a daily basis. The rate of progress is insane, including today's announcement from OpenAI of more problems solved. To help make sense of all of it, here's my conversation with three mathematicians about this moment. Each of them is an expert in the field of each of the biggest problems solved: Navier-Stokes, quasi-Riemann hypothesis, the unique games conjecture and complexity theory more generally. Ankur Moitra is a mathematician and theoretical computer scientist at MIT, visiting the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Steven Brunton (@eigensteve) is a mathematician and fluid dynamics expert at UW. Alex Kontorovich (@AlexKontorovich) is a mathematician at Rutgers specializing in number theory.

We'll be spending a lot more time trying to understand the outputs of language models. A few thoughts, tips & tricks: Writing. Something I've had success with: Ask your LLM to explain something in ASD-STE100, it's a controlled language specification originally developed for aerospace maintenance documentation. LLMs well-versed in this language and it comes with heavy constraints on clean writing style that I often find a lot more readable. Sometimes I've tried to soften it a bit e.g. ask for "80% of the way to ASD-STE100" because the spec is quite stringent. But even better: Diagrams / images. Instead of writing, ask your LLM to create a diagram. These can be a lot easier to process, parse, and understand. But even better: Web pages. Ask for output "in HTML" to get a beautiful, interactive webpage. LLMs are getting really good at frontend and can create beautiful experiences, animations, etc. But even better: Explainer videos. The output format I am most bullish on is fully custom / bespoke explainer videos generated on any arbitrary topic. Experiment with things like "Create a 3b1b style video explainer on X. Use my ElevenLabs API key for audio narration". (you'd need an API key for the latter or you can ask your LLM to find you decent free alternatives that use your local compute). This is actually starting to work! In summary: - As LLMs get better, they will do more and more of the legwork autonomously, and a lot more of our work will rise up the abstractions into oversight and understanding. - Luckily, LLMs can help here too because as intelligence and code are increasingly abundant, you can ask for large, custom, discardable software artifacts (e.g. web apps, video explainers) that would have never made sense to create before. Push the boundaries here and you'll be surprised.

A reminder that even now, at the peak of Iran's attack, many more innocent people are being killed in Gaza than in Israel, and that you won't read a word about them in any Western news source. It's as if they are invisible, or at least regarded as subhuman, by our newsrooms
This horror is still happening and you won’t see a single headline about it in Western media today.

Scientific publishing etiquette: 1. Scientists should be allowed to publish their research. 2. Publications should include the names of all contributors in the author list. 3. Junior contributors who actually did the work should be placed at the beginning of the author list. 4. Managers and senior contributors should almost always be listed at themtail end of the author list. 5. Managers should never be listed just because they are managers. To be a coauthor, they must have made non-negligible technical contributions. 6. Managers should never, ever put themselves in competition with researchers in their organization. If you stop researchers from publishing, you kill their career. That means you have to buy their life, and you'll only get people whose scientific aspirations are sufficiently low to be for sale.
Replying to @ylecun @elonmusk
Seriously though, you should let your researchers put their name on papers that describe their research. Or else what you pay them amounts to hush money. I'm sure they're pretty pissed about it.

It’s impossible to be at the Rafah crossing & not feel heartbroken. Behind these walls there are 2 million people in Gaza with no water, food, medicine, fuel. On this side, these trucks have what they need. We need to make them move—as soon as possible, as many as necessary.

While I recognize Israel’s legitimate security concerns, I also remind Israel that military operations must be conducted in strict accordance with int'l humanitarian law. Civilians must be respected & protected at all times. Civilian infrastructure must never be a target.

Chandrayaan-3 Mission: The mission is on schedule. Systems are undergoing regular checks. Smooth sailing is continuing. The Mission Operations Complex (MOX) is buzzed with energy & excitement! The live telecast of the landing operations at MOX/ISTRAC begins at 17:20 Hrs. IST on August 23, 2023. Here are the images of the moon captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) from an altitude of about 70 km, on August 19, 2023. LPDC images assist the Lander Module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map.

Unpopular opinion: What’s common between #Acadmia and #InternationalOrganisation when it comes to #AI ? Both convene experts on AI and talk about AI’s implications and offering policy recommendations through expert consultations. – at Vernier, Suisse
