Something happened to business software.
You used to pay for it once, install it, and run it. Whether on someone’s computer, or a server for everyone, it felt like you owned it. And you did.
Today, most software is a service. Not owned, but rented. Buying it enters you into a perpetual landlord–tenant agreement. Every month you pay for essentially the same thing you had last month. And if you stop paying, the software stops working. Boom, you’re evicted.
For nearly two decades, the SaaS model benefitted landlords handsomely. With routine prayers — and payers — to the Church of Recurring Revenue, valuations shot to the moon on the backs of businesses subscribed at luxury prices for commodity services they had little control over.
Add up your SaaS subscriptions last year. You should own that shit by now.
SaaS still makes sense for many products, but its grip will slip. Installation and administration used to be hopelessly complicated, but self–hosting tech is simpler now and vastly improved. Plus, IT departments are hungry to run their own IT again, tired of being subservient to Big Tech’s reign clouds.
Once upon a time you owned what you paid for, you controlled what you depended on, and your privacy and security were your own business. We think it’s that time again.

Milei just banned the Argentinian Government from using the word “free” to describe any service it provides since there is no such thing. Finally someone in government somewhere in the world who has a basic understanding of economics and then some.
Javier Milei just passed the most sensible law in world history - known as Articulo 209.
From now on, governmental institutions can no longer use the word "free" to promote any state service or function in municipal provinces or on a national level.
Milei considers the use of the word “free” a lie and feels citizens shouldn’t be lied to since the services always paid by someone, typically tax dollars.
If this were implemented in America, the Democrat Party would literally not be able to campaign anymore.

This has nothing to do with the fake antisemitism allegations and everything to do with punishing Elon for creating a social media platform where you don't have to pretend the Emperor isn't naked.

This is how you handle woke bullies. You refuse to give them what they want because what they want is your integrity.

This will be a hugely unpopular thing, however...
The premise of attaching a nominal cost to a previously free service in order to combat abuse is exactly what I did with the @haveibeenpwned API keys 4 years ago: troyhunt.com/authentication-…
This stopped abuse dead. Not a little bit, not mostly, but 100%. The reason wasn't that there was no longer an ROI for abusers, rather it was because you had to stump up a credit card that could be traced back to you. Combine that with Stripe doing a very good job of identifying fraudulent use of cards (our dispute rate is 0.01% for the last 6 months) and it's now very unattractive to do nasty stuff with the service.
Clearly, they're not going to make any money out of a $1 annual fee (and for now, that's only new users in 2 countries anyway). I've no doubt based on my own experiences that it'll put a massive dent in abuse originating from those markets, I'm just not sure how much it will piss off their user base. Or how much it will matter.

From where I stand, people are being emotional when it’s time to decipher what “incitement of violence” or hate-speech materially is.

Imagine being an evil heartless savage that is stoning kids, and still claiming you’re the “victim” as you pick up more stones to hurl at others!
Cape taxi operators would rather stone kids and innocent motorists & commuters than obey road laws.

#TaxiStrike A family in the vicinity of Crossroads in #CapeTown asked for a police escort after their car with four occupants, including two children, was stoned. One of the children was injured. For @GroundUp_News

Being a man isn't harder or easier than being a woman. It's just a different set of challenges.
Men have no idea what it's like to be as physically vulnerable as women sometimes are and women have no idea what it's like to be as disposable as men sometimes are.
This is why there will never be true "equality". We're so different that even treating men and women equally has different results.
Fighting this basic truth makes people miserable. Happiness and fulfillment comes from truly embracing who you are, not trying to opt out of it.
