💙🧱 WHAT A WEEKEND! 🧱💙
From a simple email to meeting more truly amazing people with a shared passion for one of Ethan’s loves.
When you live with a terminal illness like Duchenne muscular dystrophy, alongside complex medical needs, even doing the things you love can come at a cost.
Ethan had a brilliant but very busy weekend at the National Bricks event in conjunction with Coleraine Connect at the Coleraine leisure centre, sharing his love of Lego with so many people. Ethan loves sharing what he does, so the opportunity to show off his builds was amazing. But now that it’s all over, he’s absolutely exhausted! 🥱
Living with Duchenne means his body doesn’t cope with things the way other people’s bodies do. Even when he’s having a great time, enjoying himself and pushing through, the exhaustion eventually catches up with him. When he comes down from the “highs” of an event like this weekend he has to do what his body is telling him (and what doesn’t come naturally to him 😆😆) and that’s to rest up. 💔 Ethan loves events about his passions and would do anything to attend them.
But despite being completely shattered, he’s so thankful for everyone who came over to his table to see his Lego, stopped for a chat, showed an interest and took the time to support him. ❤️
A HUGE thank you, and we really mean a HUGE thank you, must go to Nick, Neil and their Team at National Brick Events for being so welcoming to us to their first event in Northern Ireland and allowing us to operate a raffle at the event for Ethan’s bucket list. The raffle wouldn’t happen without the generosity of everyone who bought tickets for the raffle to help raise funds for Ethan’s bucket list. For this we are truly thankful. Every ticket purchased brings him one step closer to making more special memories and experiencing some of the things he’s always dreamed of. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to him and us. 💙
When you have a terminal illness, you learn that time is precious. You don’t know how many opportunities you’ll get to do the things you love, so every event, every memory and every person who takes the time to make you smile means so much.
His body might be exhausted, but his heart is absolutely full tonight. 🥹💙
Thank you to everyone who made this weekend so special for him and us, Your support means more than you’ll ever know.
Now it’s time to rest and recharge before his body reminds him just how much he’s done !😂💙

What a way to start a week !!!
We are absolutely thrilled to share with you all that Ethan will proudly be displaying some of his vast LEGO collection across 2 tables at this weekends National Brick events, Lego event in Coleraine.
We look forward to seeing many of you there for what is sure to be a very fun weekend 😁
Looking good and so grown up before his big appointment today 🥰

Ethan had the best morning with the best team - thank you so much to the @belfastgiants and @largelaurs for having him down today for some 18th birthday celebrations. Ethan may have lost most of the power in his muscles since he first started supporting the Giants 10 years ago but one thing he will never lose is his love for this Team 💚 he also got the chance to present them with the LEGO picture he made for them x
❤️ FROM TWO VERY GRATEFUL PARENTS ❤️
Where do we even begin?
The last week or more has completely overwhelmed us.
Watching our son turn 18 is something we struggle to put into words. Because for parents of a child with Duchenne, a birthday is never just a birthday.
Every year.
Every candle.
Every milestone.
Every year we get to watch our boy grow older…
We know how precious it is.
There have been so many moments over the years when Duchenne has taken things from Ethan that no child should have to lose. But it has never taken his incredible spirit, his smile, his determination or his ability to touch the hearts of those around him.
And then, for his 18th, you all showed him just how loved he is. ❤️
The dozens upon dozens of cards, the gifts, the messages, the videos, the birthday wishes, the people who travelled to be there, and everyone who made the effort to celebrate our boy…
We have cried. We have laughed. We have been completely overwhelmed.
Every card that came through our door meant something. Every message meant something. Every person who stood beside Ethan and celebrated this milestone with him meant something.
Because behind every card, every gift and every message was something far more precious…
Someone choosing to make Ethan’s life a little brighter.
As his parents, we will never be able to thank you enough for that.
We have spent 18 years fighting alongside our son, watching him face battles that no child should ever have to face. We have watched Duchenne change his life in ways we wish we could have protected him from.
So to stand there and watch him surrounded by so much love on his 18th birthday was something we will carry in our hearts forever.
You didn’t just celebrate a birthday. You celebrated Ethan. You celebrated 18 years of his life. You celebrated the fighter, the son, the boy we are so unbelievably proud to call ours.
Thank you for giving our son memories that will stay with us forever.
Because we know something that perhaps not everyone understands…
When you live with Duchenne, you don’t take milestones for granted. You hold them tightly, because you know just how precious they are.
On Monday, our boy turned 18.
As his mum and dad, there is a part of us that wishes we could stop time right here. Freeze this moment. Keep him 18 forever. Because while everyone else sees a young man celebrating his 18th birthday, we see the little boy we brought home 18 years ago, and every battle he has fought to get here.
We know the road ahead is one we cannot control. We know there are no guarantees about how many more birthdays we will be given together. And that is a pain no parent should ever have to carry.
So this past week, we didn’t just celebrate 18 years. We held our son a little tighter. We looked at him a little longer. And we tried to etch every second into our hearts, because we know just how precious these moments are.
Ethan, if one day you ever wonder just how loved you are, we hope you remember your 18th birthday and all the people who showed up for you.
Because you are more than a diagnosis. More than Duchenne. More than the battles you have had to fight. You are our son. Our world. And for 18 years, you have taught us what strength, courage and unconditional love really look like.
Thank you to every single person who helped us give him this milestone.
We don’t know how many birthdays we will get to celebrate with our boy. But we know this one will live in our hearts forever.
❤️ 18 years of Ethan. 18 years of loving him. 18 years of fighting beside him. And one precious milestone we will thank God for every single day we were lucky enough to reach. ❤️
#duchennewithasmile #tilltheendoftheline #18th
TODAY IS THE DAY. ❤️
Today’s the day of our beautiful boy’s 18th birthday party.
A birthday that, if we are completely honest, there were times we were terrified we would never get to see.
For 18 years, Ethan has had to fight a battle he never chose. While other children were simply growing up, he was learning about hospitals, appointments, treatments, wheelchairs and the cruel reality of living with a terminal diagnosis.
We have watched Duchenne take things from him that no child should ever have to lose.
We have watched him grieve the life he should have had.
And we have stood beside him, helplessly wishing we could take every bit of it away.
But somehow, through every heartbreak, every setback and every fear about what is still to come…
Ethan keeps going.
He keeps smiling.
He keeps fighting.
He keeps showing us a strength that no 18-year-old should ever have needed to find.
So today, we are asking one thing…
SHOW UP FOR HIM.
Come and celebrate him. Make him laugh. Dance with him. Hug him. Make noise. Fill the room with love and remind him that his life matters, that he matters, and that he is surrounded by people who are grateful he is here.
Because today isn’t about Duchenne.
It isn’t about what it has taken.
Today is about the boy behind the diagnosis.
Our son.
Our Ethan.
Our miracle. ❤️
We don’t know what the future holds. We don’t know how many more birthdays, milestones or precious moments we will be given together.
So tonight, we will celebrate this one with everything we’ve got.
Because one day, when all we have left are photographs, videos and memories…
We want to be able to look back at this night and know that when Ethan needed the world to show up for him… WE DID. ❤️
Super excited for the surprise tomorrow night.
We can’t wait to see Ethan’s little face when he hopefully see loads of friends and family standing there to help him celebrate 🥳
Remember it’s upstairs in the rugby and kids are allowed as it’s a private party !!
Happy 18th birthday to our beautiful boy. ❤️
I don’t think there are words big enough to describe how proud we are of you.
You are, without a doubt, the strongest, toughest, most resilient and inspiring person we have ever known. You have had to fight battles that no child should ever have had to face, and somehow, through all the pain, the losses and the fear of what lies ahead, you still find a way to smile.
As your parents, there have been so many moments when we have wanted to take it all away from you. We would give anything in this world to make your life easier, to give you back the things Duchenne has taken from you and to protect you from everything that is still to come.
But we can’t.
And that is the hardest thing we will ever have to live with.
So today, instead of thinking about everything that has been taken from you, we want you to know that we see everything you ARE.
We see your strength.
We see your courage.
We see your determination.
We see the battles you fight that nobody else sees.
And we see the most incredible young man who, despite everything, continues to make us proud every single day.
Ethan, you are so much more than Duchenne. You are our son, our world, our heart, and one of the greatest privileges of our lives.
18 years ago, we held you in our arms and never imagined how fiercely we would one day have to fight for you.
Today, we look at you and we are completely overwhelmed with pride, love and heartbreak all at once.
Happy 18th birthday, our beautiful boy.
Keep fighting. Keep smiling. Keep being YOU.
We love you more than words will ever be able to say. ❤️

I want to ask every single one of our followers a question tonight.
How much awareness did YOU raise about Duchenne today?
Honestly… stop for a moment and think about that.
Today was World Duchenne Awareness Day.
A day that is supposed to be about making people aware of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy — a devastating, life-limiting and terminal condition that takes children’s strength, independence and ultimately their lives.
So how many people did you tell?
How many posts did you share?
How many people who knew absolutely nothing about Duchenne now know what it is?
Because from where I’m standing, the answer for the vast majority seems to be… next to none.
And that is exactly why I said in my previous post that there is a SERIOUS lack of awareness about Duchenne compared with other terminal illnesses.
The same few people who ALWAYS share our posts shared again today. And I cannot thank those people enough.
But what about our other followers?
Where were you today?
Where were your shares?
Where was your voice?
Awareness doesn’t happen by itself.
It happens when YOU share.
It happens when YOU talk.
It happens when YOU take 30 seconds out of your day to make someone else aware.
And this is not about getting likes.
It isn’t about numbers.
It isn’t about making our family feel important.
It is about a terminal illness that is taking years from our children’s lives while the world barely knows it exists.
Today was THE day to speak up for Duchenne.
And yet, once again, it feels like the Duchenne community was shouting into an empty room.
I am incredibly grateful to the small number of people who did share, who did post, who did make an effort. You know who you are, and you will never know how much that means to us.
But I have to be honest.
It hurts.
It hurts watching the same few people carry the weight of awareness while our followers simply scroll past.
Because one day, Ethan won’t be here to tell his story.
And when that day comes, I don’t want people saying, “I didn’t know.”
Because you could have known.
You could have shared.
You could have spoken.
You could have helped make people listen.
So I’m asking every single one of our followers:
Did you raise awareness for Duchenne today?
And if you didn’t…
Tomorrow is another opportunity to start.
Please share this post.
Not for us.
For Ethan.
For every boy and man living with Duchenne.
For every family watching their child slowly lose pieces of the life they should have had.
And for the hope that one day, Duchenne will be a name the whole world knows.
Because right now, there is still a SERIOUS lack of awareness.
And today proved it.
#duchenneawareness #duchennefamiliy #duchennewithasmile #tilltheendoftheline
Today is World Duchenne Awareness Day.
And honestly, it’s hard not to feel angry, frustrated and heartbroken by how little awareness Duchenne receives compared with so many other terminal illnesses.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a life-limiting, progressive disease that takes strength away bit by bit. It steals the ability to run, to walk, to climb stairs, to lift your arms, to breathe independently. It places an enormous emotional and physical burden on the boys living with it and on the families who watch the disease take pieces of their child away.
Yet where is the awareness?
Where are the campaigns that fill our television screens?
Where is the recognition in schools, workplaces and communities?
Where is the public conversation?
Where is the urgency?
There are terminal illnesses that people immediately recognise. Their awareness days are everywhere. Buildings are lit up, fundraising campaigns spread across social media, celebrities speak out, and people proudly wear the colours.
But Duchenne?
Far too often, it feels like we are shouting into an empty room.
And behind that silence are real boys.
Boys like Ethan.
A boy who is about to turn 18. A boy who has had to grow up knowing that Duchenne has already taken so much from him — and that it will continue to take more.
He shouldn’t have to fight to be seen.
None of these boys should.
We don’t want pity. We want people to understand. We want people to care. We want research to continue. We want better treatments. We want a cure. And above everything, we want these boys to have the chance of a future.
One day of awareness isn’t enough.
Because Duchenne doesn’t only exist on September 7th.
It exists every single day.
Every morning a family wakes up wondering what loss the disease will bring next.
Every appointment.
Every medication.
Every adaptation.
Every fall.
Every milestone that becomes a memory.
Every birthday that carries both celebration and fear.
So today, please don’t just scroll past.
Look at Ethan.
Look at his smile.
And remember that behind that smile is a young man living with a terminal disease that far too few people know anything about.
Duchenne deserves a voice.
Our boys deserve to be seen.
Our families deserve support.
And our children deserve more than being remembered for one awareness day a year.
They deserve a future. ❤️
#WorldDuchenneAwarenessDay #Duchenne #DuchenneMuscularDystrophy #DMD #AwarenessMatters #Ethan #LetThemBeSeen #DuchenneDeservesMore #Duchennewithasmile #tilltheendoftheline
Tomorrow is World Duchenne Awareness Day.
And in just one week, my little boy turns 18.
I keep calling him my little boy because, no matter how old he gets, that is who he will always be to me.
The little boy I held.
The little boy I watched grow.
The little boy I never imagined I would one day have to watch lose so much.
I should be spending this week thinking about his birthday.
About his cake.
About his presents.
About making sure he feels loved.
About watching him turn 18 and wondering where all those years have gone.
But somewhere in the middle of all that excitement, there is a pain that never really leaves.
Because I know what Duchenne has already taken from him.
And I know it isn’t finished.
That is the part people don’t always see.
They see Ethan smiling.
They see him laughing.
They see an incredible young man who is about to turn 18.
And he is all of those things.
But I also see the things he can no longer do.
I see the little boy who used to run.
The little boy who could get up from the floor.
The little boy who didn’t have to think about whether his body would let him do something.
I remember those things because I was there.
I watched them happen.
And I watched them disappear.
There is something incredibly painful about remembering what your child could do, while knowing they may never be able to do those things again.
And there is something even more painful about knowing that no matter how much you love them, you cannot love this disease out of their body.
You cannot take it away.
You cannot bargain with it.
You cannot promise your child that everything will be okay.
You can only stand beside them.
You can only love them.
You can only fight for them.
You can only try to make the life they have as beautiful as possible.
And sometimes, that is the hardest thing in the world.
Because I don’t want to be the mum who has to make every moment count.
I want to be the mum who gets to watch her son grow up without constantly thinking about what he might lose next.
I want to be the mum who can look at 18 and just see 18.
Not a milestone that feels precious because of everything we know.
Not a birthday that makes us think about all the boys who never got to reach it.
Not a future that comes with a fear we cannot switch off.
Just 18.
Just my son.
Just a birthday.
But Duchenne doesn’t let us have that.
So yes, we will celebrate Ethan.
We will celebrate him with everything we have.
We will make him feel loved.
We will make him feel special.
We will make memories.
We will smile.
And I know I will probably cry.
Because I am so proud of him.
But I am also heartbroken for him.
Heartbroken that he has had to grow up with a disease that has already taken so much.
Heartbroken that he has had to learn about things no child should have to learn about.
Heartbroken that there are things he wants to do that his body may not allow him to do.
And heartbroken that, while other people can look at the future with excitement, we sometimes have to look at it with fear.
I wish I could change that for him.
I wish I could give him back every bit of strength Duchenne has taken.
I wish I could give him a future without this disease hanging over it.
I wish I could take every difficult day, every frightening appointment, every loss, every worry and carry it all myself.
Because that is what you want to do as a mum.
You want to protect your child.
Even when they are 18.
Even when they are grown.
Even when you know you cannot protect them from everything.
And that is why World Duchenne Awareness Day matters to us.
Because Duchenne is not just a word.
It is our life.
It is Ethan’s life.
It is the reason we celebrate things other people might never think twice about.
It is the reason a birthday can feel like the most beautiful thing in the world and the most painful thing in the world at the same time.
It is the reason we keep fighting.
And it is the reason we need people to understand.
So tomorrow, please remember Ethan.
Remember the boys living with Duchenne.
Remember the families who love them.
Remember the children who never got the chance to grow up.
And please, don’t let Duchenne be something you only hear about once a year.
Because for us, it isn’t just one day.
It is every day.
It is every birthday.
Every milestone.
Every memory.
Every fear.
Every hope.
And in one week, my beautiful boy turns 18.
I am so proud of you, Ethan.
More than words could ever say.
And I wish, with every part of me, that I could give you the future you deserve.
💙

Today broke my heart a little more than usual. 💙
Today, while clearing out Ethan’s old upstairs bedroom, I found some of his baby things.
Things I hadn’t seen in years.
Tiny little reminders of the little boy he once was. A little boy who had his whole life ahead of him. A little boy who ran, climbed, played, laughed and dreamed without ever having to think about what his body might take away from him.
I showed Ethan what I had found.
And he broke down.
He cried.
Not just a little cry. The kind of cry that comes from somewhere deep inside, when all the things you’ve tried to keep pushed down suddenly come flooding out.
He cried about everything Duchenne has already taken from him.
The things he used to be able to do.
The independence he has lost.
The parts of his childhood that Duchenne stole.
And then came the words that no mum ever wants to hear from her child…
He is scared.
Scared of what is still to come.
Scared of what else Duchenne will take from him.
Scared of his future.
And what do you say to your child when they are crying because they are frightened of their own future?
What can a mum possibly say when the thing they’re scared of is something you can’t simply make disappear?
I wanted to tell him that everything would be okay.
I wanted to promise him that Duchenne wouldn’t take anything else.
I wanted to tell him that he would grow old, have all the experiences he dreams of, and live the life he deserves.
But I can’t promise him those things.
And that is one of the hardest parts of being his mum.
So instead, we talked.
We cried.
We talked about how none of us knows exactly what tomorrow will bring, and that we can’t allow ourselves to spend today grieving for a tomorrow that hasn’t happened yet.
We have to live today.
Because today is what we have.
His sister called too, and together we eventually managed to calm him down somewhat.
But I could still see the sadness in his eyes.
And tonight, I can’t stop thinking about it.
People see Ethan smiling.
They see his personality, his humour, his strength.
They see the young man who keeps going despite everything.
But sometimes I wish people could see beyond the smile.
Because behind that smile is a young man who knows that he has a terminal illness.
A young man who knows that Duchenne is going to continue taking things from him.
A young man who shouldn’t have to think about any of this at 17 years old.
He should be worrying about ordinary things.
Girls. Cars. Friends. His future. What he’s going to do when he’s older.
Instead, he has to think about what his future might look like without the abilities he once had.
And as his mum, there is nothing I wouldn’t give to take that knowledge away from him.
I would give anything to go back to that little boy I saw in those baby things today and tell him that he would never have to face any of this.
But I can’t.
Duchenne has already written parts of his story that we never wanted written.
And tonight, that feels incredibly cruel.
Duchenne is so unbelievably unfair.
It doesn’t just take muscles.
It takes independence.
It takes childhood.
It takes dreams.
It takes pieces of the future.
And sometimes, it takes away the innocence of a child who should never have had to understand any of this in the first place.
So tonight, I will hold my boy a little tighter.
Tomorrow, we’ll get up and we’ll face whatever comes.
We’ll laugh when we can.
We’ll make memories.
We’ll chase the dreams that are still within reach.
And we’ll live for today.
Because Ethan is here today. He is smiling today. He is loved today.
And today is all we are going to ask for.
One day at a time.
One memory at a time.
One smile at a time.
Until one day, hopefully, no other mum has to sit beside her child while they cry because they are afraid of their own future.
Duchenne needs a cure. Our boys deserve a future. 💙
