Today we remember legendary Reconnaissance Marine, Major General Lawrence H. Livingston.
During the Vietnam war, he was awarded the Navy Cross, a Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and five Purple Hearts.
MGen Livingston passed away on 28 September 2018.
His most distinguished decoration was the Navy Cross—the second-highest military award of the U.S. Department of the Navy—awarded for his actions on July 11, 1972. At the time, holding the rank of captain, Livingston was serving as a senior advisor to the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Republic of Vietnam Marine Corps (South Vietnamese forces).
During a heliborne assault in Quang Tri Province, his unit came under intense enemy fire that decimated the local leadership. Livingston immediately took command, reorganized the scattered troops, and led a counterattack on foot toward the enemy trenches, engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Furthermore, he risked his life by moving into a completely exposed area to rescue a wounded officer and bring him to safety.
