There’s a new AI frontier, and it isn’t about benchmark scores. Jonathan Siddharth, CEO of Turing (a PROOF portfolio company), wrote a piece this week that nails it. The question is no longer “how smart is the model?” It’s “can the model actually do the job?” Settle the trade. Close the books. Catch the one clause in a thousand contracts that matters. Today’s models are great at the first and shaky at the second. The only way to fix that is to put a model to work in a real company, watch where it breaks, and feed those failures back into training. Over and over. Here’s why I think Turing is in a unique spot. Most companies in AI do one of two things. Some build the training data that makes models smarter. Others deploy models inside big enterprises. Each sees half the picture. Turing does both. It helps the frontier labs train their models, and it puts those same models to work inside Fortune 500 companies. So when a model fails on a Monday morning, Turing sees it, and Turing can help fix it at the source. That loop between data and deployment is where AI turns into real economic value. Turing is building for the whole loop. Worth a read.
There’s a new AI frontier. It isn’t the benchmark anymore. It’s where models meet real work. A model that tops a leaderboard doesn’t move the economy. A model that runs a month-end close does. Models need residency.

Tomorrow, SpaceX is set to go public with an IPO that’s anticipated to shape markets for years to come, but perhaps SpaceX's most important legacy is their manufacturing revolution. SpaceX proved you could vertically integrate, design hardware around how you build it, 3D-print flight-critical components, and iterate at a pace the aerospace industry called impossible. Those lessons are in Ursa Major's DNA. Our founding employees, like Nick Doucette, built engines and spacecraft in the early days of SpaceX, and in starting Ursa Major, they took that hard-won manufacturing discipline somewhere it was urgently needed and largely missing: America's defense industrial base. A decade later, we're delivering on our founding vision. Additively manufactured engines flying hypersonic; complete missile systems going from contract to flight in eight months; solid rocket motors produced on flexible, software-defined lines. Because it's not enough to have a technologically advanced product if you can't produce it at scale. Deterrence happens on factory floors. SpaceX changed how America builds for space. We're proving those same hard-won lessons can change how America builds for the fight.

Two diametrically opposed worldviews. One that teaches humans to dream, build, strive and create value for others. Another that focuses on envy, “fairness”, govt control, and zero sum games. Feels like America is on a knife edge
Sure you can earn a billion dollars. I've been teaching people how to do it for 20 years. The way you do it is to start a company that grows fast. You don't have to do anything bad to make a company grow fast. You just have to make something people want. paulgraham.com/ace.html

Great to host @howardlutnick and his team at our factory – the largest autonomous aircraft manufacturing facility in the US. We are at the beginning of another industrial revolution. AI and robotics will dramatically remake the world over the next 5-10 years. Done right, we can save lives, save money, and save time. Today America is the global leader in autonomous logistics and @zipline is working hard to keep it that way

MUST READ from the WSJ: “Something is profoundly wrong with the U.S. welfare system—a problem that runs far deeper and is more dangerous than the shocking fraud in Minnesota that has been making headlines… real federal welfare spending has soared by 765%, more than twice as fast as total federal spending, and now costs $1.4 trillion annually. Were that money simply doled out evenly to the 19.8 million families the government defines as poor, each household would receive more than $70,000 a year.”

In preparation for the first flight test, Ursa Major has successfully static fired the Affordable Rapid Missile Demonstrator (ARMD), powered by the Draper liquid rocket engine, as part of the @AFResearchLab (AFRL) initiative to rapidly demonstrate affordable hypersonic munition concepts. In this recent ground test, Ursa Major static fired ARMD for the full-duration mission cycle and demonstrated bipropellant operations. This static fire comes just over six months after AFRL contract award. #FlyFaster
