~~ eXciTed t0 anNouNCe ~~ @typecapital, the 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 for founders to take their first check. I spoke with @FortuneMagazine about building Type –still in its earliest stages– and how excited I am about the next-generation of founders and fund managers. There’s still a ton more work to do, but I haven’t felt this excited, focused, and (dare I say) convicted in a long time. To the builders, always. You’re exactly our type. fortune.com/2024/05/13/terri…

I'm hiring my next Chief of Staff. You won’t know every field I work in. What matters is how quickly you learn, the questions you ask, and whether you can think from first principles. You’ll help evaluate opportunities and work with founders building consequential companies. Technical background preferred. Three-year commitment. Menlo Park, in person. i’m shocked by the number of products that exist solely to tell you you are wasting money on unused subscriptions. do that many people not track their expenses? do that many people not know where their money is going?

Today, China dominates rare-earth mining and processing. But that wasn’t always the case. Solcoa’s @hoomanrenezhad explains how the West lost its rare-earth mojo: "So contrary to popular belief, we do mine in the West. We have an enormous rare earth mine in Australia. There’s one in California." “The actual raw feedstock is not rare." “The bottleneck is what you do after it. It’s the processing. That is something that we’re completely unable to do in the West." “We actually invented these processes in America." "The technologies used to make rare earths in China today are American technologies from the Manhattan Project.” “We built this technology and these systems, and then we shipped it to China. China dominated. They matured it. They took over.” Now his company is trying to bring that capability back to the U.S. with a process built for today’s economics. “If we were just copying that same technology stack again, it was impossible. The economics don’t close.”

We must make the metals of power and motion.
We’ve secured $75M in financing to build Solcoa One, our first commercial rare earth metallization plant.

Hot/weird take: I think we’re getting a little *too good* at startup launches. Everything feels manufactured.

Best thing Jack Dorsey ever told you? @tcburning: "When I first got my job offer at GV, I was working at Twitter and Jack called me and he told me I should not take the job. I shouldn't become a VC, that I should be a product manager for the rest of my career." "I almost listened to him, but I didn't... That was my earliest exercise in having my own trust and conviction in my own decisions."
