This speech has made me cry, literally.
Here is the withering speech by Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka that could boil my grandmother's yams.

Delighted to have known Mr. Rhodes since the early seventies, when we shared a house, 5 St Radigund Street, and a thousand conversations in Canterbury…

As a senior participant in this truly heroic adventure, I would like to say how amazing it was to work with a publisher filled with a sense of possibility rather than its defeated opposite. I look forward to seeing Tariq, Luke, Johnny and everyone else find new ways of thriving.

Universities? The Humanities? Perhaps we should start again, working our way up from the 19th century kindergarten in any broken-down city that might be at hand. Thanks for the larger thought, Lawrence Weschler. March 14, 2024 : Issue #63 open.substack.com/pub/lawren…

It is especially dismal to hear of the demolition of so many Humanities subjects at the University of Kent. Does VC Karen Cox have any idea of the ambition of the founding project? ⁦@gavinesler⁩ ⁦@UniKent⁩ ⁦@UniKentArts⁩ ⁦@KSBylines⁩

Thanks for remembering that essay on water privatisation and it’s connection to the anti-fluoridationist movement, the Perrier boom and, in the case of Patrick Clavell Blount, how the battle for ‘pure water’ became a tribute to the lost bomber pilots he had cooked for in WW2

Obviously we lost the battle but at least the sources of the present chaos got surveyed . I didn’t finish the chapter in time for the first edition in 1991 but I did squeeze it into the last 2 editions. @jamiembrixton made a good film with this material for BBC2’s Late Show

‘Blurbing’ should only be done occasionally but I was delighted to liken Lutz Seiler’s In Case of Loss to a magical artisanal workshop where wheels turn and views keep changing. A model of what writing can and should be doing now. andotherstories.org/in-case-…

I have long wondered about the ‘Jazz’ jumpers worn by volunteer strike breakers in the General Strike of 1926. Guardian fashion writers should have been there first. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-6…

So things definitely can get better. When I started coming to Sheerness a few years ago, the Dock Church was a burned out ruin… but no more
