On @MANOVA_Magazin_ we got into what all this AI compute is actually being built for. Planned AI data centers could demand around 200 GW, roughly 40% of today’s U.S. power supply, while AI is increasingly being framed as national-security infrastructure in a race with China.

"The FCC has these new guidelines saying that we need to sunset copper lines and so telecoms are doing that. What are they replacing it with? The Broadband Equity and Access and Deployment Program, which is $42 billion, for the main goal of ensuring that every person in America has access to high speed internet. Whether they like it or not. So this is not just the cities. This is bringing that high-speed internet, low-earth orbit, satellite internet to the most remote parts of the United States. And every state is on board. Every budget has been accepted in every state and U.S. territory. So we are seeing the foundations of the digital prison being built..." What happens when the infrastructure we rely on becomes infrastructure for tracking us? Hakeem joined @Geopolitics_Emp to discuss surveillance, digital ID, AI and how community and privacy-focused tools can help us protect our autonomy.
Hakeem Anwar of @abovephone and @takebackourtech discusses the rapid global expansion of the control grid, highlighting how governments and corporate entities are aggressively laying the infrastructure for surveillance, including the multi-billion-dollar BEAD Program for expanding satellite and fiber internet access to enforce digital ID and tracking. Furthermore, the conversation looks at the troubling rise of AI-driven automation. Hakeem emphasizes the vital importance of community, digital sovereignty, urging individuals to adopt privacy-focused technology, alternative communication devices, and cash-based barter systems to protect their personal autonomy. 📲🛂

⚡️Less Screen Time, Better Outcomes Two large studies found something worth paying attention to: limited phone use may have some benefits, but once usage climbs past a certain point, the outcomes start getting worse. For students, more time on social media, gaming, and browsing was associated with lower math scores after that threshold. Another study of 40,000 adolescents found a similar “Goldilocks” pattern across stress, sleep, depression, and other measures. This clip is from our webinar, Breaking Out of Tech Addiction: above.sh/YDCYyu Do you limit your screen time?

Replying to @otogomes
@otogomes asked Hakeem what his ideal tech future looks like. Think small communities running their own servers for email, files, video calls, even local AI instead of depending on giant centralized platforms. This future is attainable and it’s up to us to create it.

⚡️The Social Media Self-Image Feedback Loop Social media gives us endless opportunities to compare ourselves to other people and that constant comparison may be changing how we see ourselves. One study found that heavier social media use among young people was associated with more body dysmorphia, with image-based Instagram and Tiktok standing out. And it’s not just posting. Passive scrolling and constantly watching other people’s lives may actually be more closely tied to negative self-image than creating content yourself. That feedback loop between comparison, appearance, and self-esteem is one of the patterns we explore in our webinar Breaking Out of Tech Addiction: above.sh/YDCYyu Do you think social media has changed the way people see themselves?

Talking data centers and flock cameras with @Geopolitics_Emp by the time surveillance hardware goes up, the fight has already moved pretty far down the road. These systems get approved somewhere. Get organized before your city council or county commission say yes.

The digital cage cannot be hidden anymore, with the move from planning to implementation stage. I mapped some of the surveillance architecture being built across the globe these days: digital IDs, CBDC, age verification, biometrics, DAC8, smart cars etc. vs. freedom tech as the exit strategy. It all connects. Read & share👇

I sat down with Oto Gomes to talk about how surveillance has changed since the Snowden disclosures. Location data can now be bought from commercial data brokers without the traditional warrant process. And location is only one layer. As our devices collect more about our bodies and lives, where do we draw the line?

In San Marcos, Texas, residents twice pushed back against a planned $1.5 billion data center that would use 380 MW of power—almost 2.5x the city’s peak demand. Read the case study: aidatacentermap.org/

On Redacted, we got into the absurdity surrounding the new terminology being used to describe people opposed to new surveillance tech. @DBrozeLiveFree
Across the U.S., people opposing data centers are being labeled "violent extremists” when, in reality, the real threat is unchecked AI infrastructure. We need to call out the inversion: those protecting land and water aren’t the ones doing harm. @RedactedNews

New Shock Gloves Used on Students In Omaha kimmonson.com/news/omaha-sch… Susan Kochevar, owner of the 88 Drive-In Theatre, brought the Omaha deployment to @KimIversenShow on September 4. The company’s name was what struck her first, she said. “I just find that name right out of George Orwell’s 1984,” Kochevar said. She told listeners it is “a device that the school resource officers wear,” that it “delivers a painful shock ranging from 324 to 362 volts directly through skin contact,” and that it is “very painful, and it doesn’t leave a mark,” which she noted the company advertises as an advantage.

In my conversation with @Geopolitics_Emp and @DBrozeLiveFree , we got into the bigger picture: license plate readers are just one piece of a surveillance system that includes drones, digital infrastructure, and the data centers storing and processing it all. The technology is connected. Our response has to be bigger than fighting one camera at a time.

Is wearable technology creating an internet of bodies? In our latest #TBOT interview, I sat down with @AndrewKaufmanMD , a medical researcher who has firsthand experience with wearable biosensor technology. That experience gives him a unique perspective on the rapidly expanding Internet of Bodies and the risks that come with connecting our bodies to the internet. “Gather the data first, and ask questions later” seems to be the modus operandi of the big tech companies steering the wearable industry, Andrew and I discuss how this fits into brainwave decoding, wearable biosensors, digital IDs, biometric surveillance, AI, and the growing push to gather massive amounts of personal data. How much of your health data are you willing to give away for convenience? Watch now on Substack: tbot.substack.com/p/kaufman
