Gibson off Eckersley in 1988, and the detail that makes it is how narrow the window was. It was his only plate appearance of the entire World Series. He could barely run.
The count got to three and two, and Eckersley threw the backdoor slider rather than the fastball, which is the pitch Gibson had been told to look for in that situation. Then he hit it out on one leg and hobbled around the bases.
Game 1, not a clincher, and it still worked like a knockout punch for the rest of the series. One swing from a man who had no business taking one, in the opening game of a series nobody expected Los Angeles to be in.
