Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia’s Arsi / East Arsi Zone have faced years of targeted violence. EHRCO documented at least 432–458 civilians killed between ~2021 and mid-2026, mainly in districts like Shirka, Merti, and Jeju, with attacks including killings, abductions, home burnings, and assaults on churches.
The pattern continued in 2026. After earlier waves that killed dozens more, the Holy Synod confirmed about 60 Orthodox faithful killed in October attacks in Merti and Shirka alone — including children and the elderly — with homes burned and many displaced. Church and local reports describe repeated failures to protect civilians.

በተጨማሪም በሰልፉ ላይ የተሰሙት ዋነኛ መፈክሮች የሕዝቡ ዋና አጀንዳ በሕይወት የመኖርና የህልውና ጥያቄ እንጂ የአገዛዙ የጦርነት ማስፈጸሚያ የሆነው የወደብ አጀንዳ አለመሆኑን የሚያመላክቱ ነበሩ። ሰልፈኞቹ የአማራ ሕዝብ ግድብም ሆነ ወደብ በሕይወት የመኖር ዋስትናው ሲረጋገጥ ብቻ እንደሆነ በመግለፅ፣ አገዛዙ የውክልና ጦርነት አስፈጻሚ ነው ሲሉ ተቃውሟቸውን አሰምተዋል። አገዛዙ በነቂስ ወጥቶ ድምፁን የሚያሰማውን ሕዝብ ለማስፈራራትና ለመበተን የድሮን ቅኝት ቢያደርግም፣ የአካባቢው ሕዝብ ሳይበገስ ሰልፉን በስኬት ማጠናቀቁን የኮሩ ሚዲያና ኮሙኒኬሽን ክፍል በምስል አስደግፎ ከስፍራው ያደረሰው መረጃ ያረጋግጣል።

On October 21st, local sources reported that more than 200 Amhara civilians had been killed and over 100 others remained missing following attacks by ENDF and Gada Commando forces over the previous 24 hours in Ali Kebele, Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region.
More than 30,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), who had previously fled attacks in Ando Dedicho, Meleketa, Mender Three and Waja, were forced to abandon their belongings and flee for a second time into surrounding forests after renewed violence reached Ali Kebele, where they had sought refuge.
Video footage shared from the area shows displaced civilians crossing the Anger River while fleeing the attacks.

Regardless of whom you serve or whose interests you are so passionately invested in, this is an absolute low—even by your standards. As a journalist, you’d think the bare minimum would be to defend the right to express ideas, not cheer on their suppression. Apparently, that expectation was a little too ambitious!

On October 20th, a drone strike by the Abiy regime killed students attending classes at Sana Primary School in Dera Woreda, South Gondar Zone, Amhara Region. The attack occurred at approximately 10:00 AM, leaving several students dead and numerous others with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
On the same day, at approximately 11:40 AM, another drone strike targeted and destroyed the town administration office in Wolesh Town, Andabet Woreda, South Gondar Zone.

On October 20th, a coordinated attack by Abiy regime forces left Amhara civilians dead and widespread destruction in Ali Kebele, Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region. The town, which had been sheltering more than 30,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), was engulfed in flames following the assault.
Local sources identified the attacking forces as ENDF, Oromia Region Gada Commando, regional special forces, Repi Lola and militia units. Thousands of displaced civilians who had previously fled violence in Ando Dedicho, Meleketa, Mender Three and Waja were forced to flee for a second time, abandoning their belongings and seeking refuge in surrounding forests.
Residential homes and businesses in Abajo, Ali and areas surrounding the local church were reportedly set ablaze, while public and private property, vehicles and tractors were extensively looted. Local sources described the town as engulfed in smoke and widespread destruction.

On October 19th, reports from Kiremu Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, indicated that Oromia regional security forces were carrying out renewed attacks against Amhara civilians and religious institutions. In Wodesa Dima Teklehaimanot, approximately 10 kilometers from the woreda’s administrative center, numerous civilians, including the chairman of Wodesa Teklehaimanot Church’s parish council, were killed.
The renewed attacks follow large-scale violence beginning in August involving Oromia regional security forces, including Gada Commando, Gachana Sirna, regional police, special forces and locally organized armed groups. According to local reports, more than 60,000 Amhara residents have been displaced, seven churches burned, five villages destroyed and numerous properties looted.
Humanitarian conditions among displaced residents have deteriorated significantly, with eight children and two elderly individuals reportedly dying from hunger and related hardships in displacement camps. Many others face severe shortages of food, medicine and healthcare. Meanwhile, serious concerns have emerged regarding the safety of approximately 270–300 Amhara detainees who have been held for years at the Kiremu Woreda Police Station.
