Friday mood: closing tickets, opening tabs, and pretending that the server room temperature is a personal problem.

Nobody thinks about rack depth until the rails don’t fit, the cables bend at a questionable angle, or the server refuses to cooperate. Then suddenly depth is the only specification that matters.

The original budget was $500. The current setup has: ✅️️️️️️️ A managed switch ✅️️️️️️️ A firewall ✅️️️️️️️ A NAS ✅️️️️️️️ Three hypervisors ✅️️️️️️️ A UPS ✅️️️️️️️ A rack The original budget is no longer available for comment.

We asked r/sysadmin about the weirdest server configs they’ve seen at work. Your story goes in the thread or the replies: reddit.com/r/sysadmin/commen…

CPU: 12% RAM: 38% Storage: 64% Temperature: Normal Sysadmin: Why does it sound like a Boeing 737 in here?

E̶v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶h̶o̶m̶e̶l̶a̶b̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶t̶s̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶a̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶n̶.̶ Every homelab ends with a device sitting on top of another device because the rack is full.

“Is your server supposed to sound like that?” There are two kinds of sysadmins: 1. Those who know exactly which fan is making that noise. 2. Those who have learned to ignore it.

Me: I have carefully planned every U of this rack. Also me, three weeks later: I need to fit one more thing in here.

Rack depth is one of those specs that looks boring until your server rails don’t fit. Check the chassis depth, rail requirements, rear clearance, and cable bend radius before ordering. The server fitting inside the cabinet is the bare minimum. You still need to be able to install, connect, and service it.

Nothing humbles you quite like spending three hours troubleshooting a network issue only to discover someone unplugged the switch. Anyway. Who touched the cables? #sysadmin #networking

Your homelab has two types of hardware: 1️⃣️️️️️️ The stuff you actually need. 2️⃣️️️️️️ The stuff you bought because it was a good deal. Somehow, both are running 24/7. 😏 #homelab #sysadmin

Servers used to fill entire rooms. Now you can run one on hardware smaller than your thumbnail. And somehow we still find a way to put 42U of equipment in the garage. Btw, we've got some: sysracks.com/catalog/racks-b…

The hardest part of running a homelab is pretending you bought the hardware for the project. We both know you just wanted the hardware.

Happy #HugYourMainframeDay to everyone who’s ever trusted a machine more than a coworker.

Your server can be doing almost nothing and still costing you money. Idle CPU ≠ idle power. PSUs, fans, storage, networking, cooling, and the rack keep drawing power whether your CPU is at 10% or 90%. “It’s barely using resources” isn’t the same as “it’s efficient.”

Let’s talk origin stories. What was your first server, what was it running, and what did you absolutely over-engineer for no reason? Drop the specs. We want to see how the homelab obsession started. 👀

Three things that make everyone at the office happy: 🔐 Security: the server is secure. ⚙️ CTO: the server stays up. 💰 CEO: no unexpected infrastructure costs. Sysadmin: everything works because nobody touched anything.
