A connection to reality (including brain networks) from @sabine mouth; Finally a Use for String Theory youtu.be/Hj5b0ieVWSo?is=HMFP…
String theory is what happens when an intelligent system is starved of sensory input and starts hallucinating. Intelligence needs grounding. For this reason, intelligence is practically never the bottleneck to solving impactful problems. The bottleneck is iterated contact with reality.

If time is cyclicality, and every unit in the universe is part of some cycle, then time is a property of any system that exists in relation to another. Further, our conscious brain creates exactly this: inner time emerging from the relationship between one 'now' and the next.

Our Brain: A Geometry of Time, Memories, and Consciousness

Nice, now I can relate to this elusive topic👌😊 academic.oup.com/nc/article/…
You’re both wrong. There is a way to tell what brain activity is associated with consciousness and that’s through selective action of anesthesia which blocks consciousness while sparing nonconscious brain activities by quantum interactions with microtubules inside brain neurons (and glia). academic.oup.com/nc/article/… nature.com/articles/s41598-0… So, no, classical computers won’t be conscious. You need microtubules and quantum collapse by Penrose OR.

AI will truly break extraordinary records when it achieves a breakthrough in understanding consciousness.

My take: Under anesthesia, the brain may stop creating an inner sense of 'now', leading to loss of consciousness. Breathing, heartbeat, digestion are all automated. But your next thought, word, or decision remains genuinely unpredictable, even to yourself.
Some of us have a pretty good idea (with significant evidence) that anesthesia selectively blocks consciousness (sparing nonconscious brain activities) by quantum effects on microtubules. But the conventional wisdom is befuddled because they stick to ‘cartoon neuron’ theories based on 1950s neuroscience in which anesthesia must work exclusively on membrane receptors and channels. Anesthesia affects many or all all of these, but not in a way that explains anesthesia. For example some anesthetics block, others potentiate excitatory channels. The ill-informed claim combinations of action on GABA_A receptors (propofol) or NMDA (ketamine) receptors cause anesthesia but other GABA_A and NMDA receptors don’t. Propofol and ketamine also bind and act on microtubules to cause loss of consciousness. Genomics, proteomics, optogenetics and pharmacodynamics point to microtubules. We will have a session on anesthesia and consciousness Friday morning at tsc2026.org with Sarika Katiyar, Hemal Patel (UCSD) and Michael Wiest. Brian you will be there I hope (you’re speaking Thursday afternoon). Let’s discuss afterwards.

He is pretty serious 🤔
Instead of real brain why not a data center using the brain jelly that we developed. Then u wont have to replace the neuron cell every six months youtube.com/shorts/vDblHU88O…

The question isn't whether AI can be conscious; it's whether AI can help us build the new physics framework needed to understand human consciousness.

Take home message: “mortality risk is characterised by increased circulating levels of proteins involved in immune responses, whereas reduced mortality risk is associated with higher levels of proteins supporting genomic stability and core cellular maintenance processes.”

Penrose amazing take on consciousness (from around min 25): youtu.be/IdzXbIW9kxY
I’ve been asking Sabine for her opinion of Orch OR and now we have it. ‘It’s crap!’ she says. Why? Sabine says 1) there are microtubules in every cell, so why is only the brain conscious? 🔨 1) Other cells can be conscious, separately on different time scale, or collectively entangled with others. But the brain has the largest massively parallel arrays, especially mixed polarity antiparallel arrays of microtubules in cortical layer 5 pyramidal neurons. Mixed polarity networks probably promote interference beats at slower frequency. Roger Penrose and I proposed in 2014 that EEG was generated by megahertz oscillation interference downshifting . After all these years we still don’t understand the EEG. Now we know about the DDG, dodeconography, 12 orders of frequency buried in EEG. It’s the work Anirban Bandyopadhyay and Pushpendra Singh and I’ll present it at Society for Neuroscience in November. So the microtubules in the brain are quite special. They generate the EEG and DDG. researchgate.net/publication… Sabine 2) And then a miracle happens’ as our explanation of the hard problem of phenomenal experience. 🔨 2) That’s faced by all theories and the Orch OR answer comes from Sir Roger’s objective reduction OR moments of NOW which are collapses of the quantum wavefunction due to quantum gravity/general relativity in which qualia are fundamental. As Sabine says Roger is the world’s greatest physicist. The cartoon neuron theories are only handwaving about emergence. Sabine, are they crap too? Sabine 3) ‘many people think Orch OR is crap but are too polite to say so’. 🔨 3) there are many influential people who ignore and suppress Orch OR. There have no valid criticism. We solved the ‘warm, wet and noisy’ issue by the quantum-friendly quantum underground where anesthetics act to selectively block consciousness. There’s more evidence for Orch OR than for all cartoon neuron theories combined. They have none. Please tell me why the microtubule part of Orch OR is wrong. What exactly is your beef? Seriously. Why is it crap? You know I invited you to The Science of Consciousness. Your assistant said you were too busy.
