Huge congratulations to @quintendf and the entire Tolan team, and ofc @mignano and @usv are an incredible fit here.
Super inspired by the Tolan story, more so after reading @alexrkonrad's article on the raise, especially the line, "These Tolans...are the product of a startup launched in 2023."
As a founder that started my company in 2024, there is often a looming sense of anxiety looking at new companies becoming huge successes overnight catching the right wave, while you've been playing the long game, working diligently towards something you're actually passionate about. It's rather refreshing to see a company that has gone through the motions of starting out with a similar but distant product, distilled their learnings into progress, and spent real time considering the needs of real users outside of the bubble.
More power to companies like Tolan that are making consumer AI, and the process of building an intelligence company less alienating.
Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you.
Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet.
The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations.
This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year.
Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m.
To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)

Been following @OfflineProtocol since my last post
Their new site makes the idea much easier to picture
Warehouse robots, Airport crews, Drones.
All needing to coordinate when connections get patchy
@sxtvik making a technical problem feel very real here
I am spending more hours working and thinking about work now than I did before AI.
I was led to believe agents will accelerate productivity beyond human capabilities to help me free up time. But it’s causing the world to move so quickly that I feel a constant sense of pressure to now dedicate all free time to do even more work.
Anyone else?

Came across this post and felt a deep sense of grief.
Whether companies participating in these training services accept it or not, this is human exploitation.
“But they’re getting paid…” No, they’re not receiving a fair value for the hands-on data they’re providing and likely have very little idea what their contribution enables in the larger scheme of things.
I’m extremely tired of companies using developing economies as guinea pigs, first the crypto companies did it to farm data and MAUs, and now AI companies are doing it at an even larger scale.
The exploitation needs to end.
Left with some goodies and a very long wishlist

> more companies than ever before to help you sell to other companies
> more companies than ever to help you build internally so you don’t need to buy
I think it’s all becoming very bleak and uninspiring

We're giving away $1,000,000 of pizza right now all across the U.S.
It's pizza night, on us. To celebrate the launch of Hark Pro. Download the app and tell Hark to order a free pizza. hark.com/download

Users report that Hark's $1M pizza promotion frequently fails because the $30 DoorDash gift card does not apply at checkout, sometimes resulting in full charges. Hark acknowledged a temporary bug and said affected users would be contacted.

Revisiting my old conversations with Dan re Farcaster. Feel validated that I had predicted this outcome a long time ago, but also feel sad because I know how great decentralized social could’ve been.
With Farcaster's acquisition announcement, I can now share my message to the team earlier this year.
I find it funny how different Balaji's aspirations for this platform are from mine. I always believed FC had a real opportunity to challenge Bluesky and Mastodon as a champion of decentralized communities and free speech. With all the posts I'm seeing from people getting immediately banned, I do not believe the new owners embody those values and interests.
Rip Farcaster, I had higher hopes.

Opened my personal website today after a long time to make some updates, and got a good reminder from the version of me that wrote this message.
Got too caught up in enterprise sales for the past few months and almost accidentally lost myself for a second there.
I'm back.
VC asked me what school I attended on a call today.
He said he only invests in founders who attended a prestigious school like Harvard.
Didn't get a chance to tell him that when I was in college, prestigious schools like Harvard would invite me as a guest speaker to share my work with their students.
