Ancient Roman glass flask known as The Populonia Bottle. It dates from the Late Imperial Roman period (275–325 AD), is believed to have been manufactured in Italy as a travel souvenir, found near the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia, Italy 🇮🇹, shortly before 1812. It is currently housed in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. It is an example of a Late Roman ampulla (flask). Rather than being a utilitarian container for liquids, its extensive decorative detailing indicates it served as a high-end commemorative keepsake—essentially a luxury tourist souvenir bought by wealthy travelers visiting the resort areas of the Bay of Naples. The bottle is crafted from blown, translucent blue-green glass and is meticulously decorated using a wheel-engraving technique. The engravings represent a schematic "map" or panoramic cityscape view of the famous Roman luxury resort town of Baiae (located on the Bay of Naples): The prominent inscription visible across the center reads "OSTRIARIA", which labels the extensive commercial oyster beds and aquaculture facilities that Baiae and the neighboring Lake Lucrinus were famous for. The crisscross patterns directly beneath the word depict the underwater wooden stakes and grids used to cultivate oysters. The registers surrounding the bottle depict major local architectural landmarks. These include the seafront promenade (ripa), massive pillars or concrete piers (pilae) supporting arched harbor moles, and palaces or thermal bath complexes built into the hillsides. #archaeohistories

Reconstruction of a Hadrian's Wall milecastle by Peter Lorimer... Hadrian's Wall had up to 80 milecastles, one every Roman mile, approximately. These fortlets housed a small garrison, probably no more than 30 soldiers. This is a reconstruction of Milecastle 48 (Poltross Burn Milecastle), also called The King's Stables. Its ruins are located on the edge of the village of Gilsland in Cumbria, England. Two features that can be seen amid the ruins today are steps that led up to the wall walkway and an oven in the northwest corner. In the reconstruction, you can see smoke rising from the oven, and the steps are partly visible by the north gate. This milecastle was built in the AD 120s, and the reconstruction shows how it might have appeared in about AD 170. 📷 : a reconstruction drawing of the milecastle at Poltross Burn as it may have looked around AD 170.
