Zoos in the US have started giving experimental mRNA injections to endangered baby elephants.
Saint Louis Zoo just announced that a 1½-year-old Asian elephant named Jet received his third dose of an experimental mRNA shot targeting elephant herpesvirus (EEHV). It’s developed by Baylor College of Medicine and uses lipid nanoparticles to deliver synthetic mRNA.
Multiple zoos are involved. A peer-reviewed study showed some elephants didn’t develop antibody responses after the first doses and needed boosters. Another study documented two young elephants at Cincinnati Zoo contracting EEHV after receiving two doses of the experimental injection.
They’re expanding experimental mRNA technology into endangered wildlife. The same platform that was rolled out on humans is now being tested on baby elephants.
