Coming from a big family has taught me a lot about love, loyalty, forgiveness, and also how complicated family can be. I love deeply. I show up. I give my time. I remember the little things. I try to be there when people need me. And one of my biggest struggles is what happens inside me when I feel like that love is not returned in the same way. I struggle with feeling overlooked. I struggle with wondering why certain people are chosen and others are not. I struggle with replaying things in my head and asking myself, “What did I do wrong?” And if I am being completely truthful, I struggle with resentment. That is why today’s Gospel hit me differently. In the parable, the landowner pays everyone the same wage, even though some worked all day and others arrived much later. The people who had been there from the beginning were angry. And I understand them. I understand that feeling of, “What about everything I did? What about all the times I showed up? Doesn’t that count for something?” But then I realized where resentment begins. Comparison. The second I start looking at what someone else received, who someone else chose, who got recognized, who got included, or who seems to matter more, I start keeping score. And Christ is asking me to put the scoreboard down. That is difficult for me. Because sometimes I want justice according to my own measurements. I want people to notice the effort. I want love to be returned equally. I want loyalty to be recognized. But people are imperfect. Families are imperfect. And faith does not mean pretending something did not hurt. It means refusing to let hurt become bitterness. I am learning that I can be disappointed without becoming resentful. I can be hurt without becoming hard. I can love someone without demanding that they love me exactly the way I think they should. I can stop asking whether everyone appreciates me and start asking whether I am becoming the person God is asking me to become. That is the harder lesson. Someone else receiving something does not mean God has forgotten me. Someone else being chosen does not make me less valuable. Someone else’s blessing does not take anything away from mine. I am still learning this. I am still learning how to let things go without pretending they never mattered. I am still learning how to forgive without keeping a private list of every disappointment. I am still learning that peace sometimes comes when I stop demanding explanations from people and start surrendering the hurt to God. Maybe that is what Christ was trying to teach all along. Love without keeping score. Serve without demanding recognition. Forgive without pretending. And trust that even when people overlook you, God never does.
