Merge takes on San Diego! ☀️
Our team flew in from across the world kicking off our first team dinner. Stay tuned for more!
Last week, the entire Baseten team came together in Chicago for our biannual company offsite.
Since the beginning, we've come together twice a year in different cities to connect and build together: talent shows, hackathons, customer conversations, and late-night karaoke sessions.
At one of our early offsites in 2022, there were 19 people. It's hard to imagine that now, with nearly 400 people (and counting), this is the last time we'll be this "small."
We're grateful to all the wonderful people who make Baseten's culture what it is today: fast, quality-obsessed, and deeply committed to our customers.
If you want to join us for the next one, we're hiring.
Cognition is now at the size where there are several large hubs around the world. It's that point in a company's growth trajectory that makes it more challenging to maintain culture and a deep connection to everyone at HQ
That's why we flew our entire team to a ranch to align on priorities and strategy, but also get everyone to meet in-person
Logistically this seemed impossible, whatever headcount was planned kept getting blown out of the water as we grew faster and faster, but this team has never let logistics get in the way of solving a problem. We eventually had hundreds of people camp out in tents to make this happen after all the rooms were taken (yes, I was in a tent with our head of Sales). Though this seemed adventurous at first, all doubts flew out the window when getting to meet all the new folks that have recently joined the team. The highlight for me was a poker tournament where people who dropped out would then join the karaoke crowd, and it felt like a full blown concert with members of the team. Our new VP of Eng (@jaredpalmer) won the tourney (great way to start his new gig)
It's important to stress that at any given point we get everyone together, it will be the easiest time it will ever be to meet people you don't know...at some point it could be impossible
The most important factor to Cognition's success will always be its people, while offsites can be expensive and time consuming, it's invaluable to make sure the company feels as one. I have no doubt that everyone else is as fired up as I am right now

Do you want to organize an epic offsite like Jason, but your budget is way lower than $8,000 per person?
Here are some tips:
- Pick more affordable locations with v good global flight connections (Madrid, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Vienna, Mexico City)
- Add locations of your colleagues to this tool and get the most optimal location (# of stopovers vs. price) finder.surfoffice.com
- Locations up to a 60-minute drive from the airport into the countryside are usually much better value for money
- Focus on low/shoulder season, and this might be very different for similar locations (e.g. August is not a high season in Madrid)
- Once you know the location and you are flexible with dates, pick the cheapest option with this tool dates.surfoffice.com
Twice a year we fly everyone in our company to a city so we can all hang out, share meals, and work/play together for a week. Given that we're fully remote, these IRL meetups are the only way we really get to see each other in person. They've become tradition, and they're among the most important things we do all year.
We've been doing these meetups for decades now, and people often wonder how much they cost and if they're worth it. They're expensive and they're worth it.
Here's the accounting comparing the last 9 meetups going back to 2022.
Got questions? Post 'em here!
what a cool team building activity
We had a Hampton event with the FDNY a couple weeks ago. 23 people participated.
Some FDNY facts:
- New York City Has 218 Firehouses
- Some Firehouses handle 4,600+ calls a year
- Average Response Time is just 6-7 min
- Most FDNY calls aren't fires
Attendees said this event changed their life. Which I didn’t expect.
Because:
1. It taught them how to overtrain
2. When you make a mistake, how to diagnose the problem and then improve

Doist Connect vibes
A decade of doing these retreats, it never gets old, just hanging out, working, and having fun!
This one is a lot about AI leverage. The shift across roles feels like an inflection point for how work gets done.
Lastly, the service and food in France have been incredible. You gotta hat tip the French sometimes! 😅

Still riding the high from our recent company retreat on the lake. This year, we had 20 more people around the campfire than last - and the growth was more than just headcount.
It was incredible to watch new faces jump right in, spark new ideas, and deepen what makes this team special.
Big cheers to our June hires (shoutout @audrey madden, @david murphy, @guilherme castro ramires da silva)!

Does anyone in NYC know a facilitator who can help Sam?
This july we're doing a company retreat for Hampton.
For an exercise, I want the entire company to map our our customer's journey and then how we can improve it.
I'd love to hire someone to be there with us and draw out what we discuss on Figma so we can use the insights.
The retreat is in NYC.
Who can I hire for this?
