Forever grateful that I got to be part of the Unacademy journey over the last 10 years.
Building it alongside @gauravmunjal, @RomanSaini and @sumjain, and so many incredible team members, educators and investors has been an absolute privilege.
It’s surreal to think that something we once discussed as an idea went on to reach millions of learners. I still remember the many conversations where Gaurav said educators would become celebrities, when that was far from obvious. Unacademy made that happen.
We built a great brand by obsessing over the details and caring deeply about educators and learners. That mattered even more in an industry where many resorted to aggressive sales practices in pursuit of growth at all costs.
Although this is not the outcome many of us imagined, Unacademy changed how India learns online, gave educators the recognition they deserved and made high-quality education more affordable and accessible to millions.
I’ll always be proud of what we built and the people who made it possible!
Six years ago today, Unacademy became a unicorn. Today, Unacademy has closed its acquisition by UpGrad for just over $200M. We raised at a peak, but sold at a fraction of that. I'm not going to dress these facts up. But I am proud of what this team did between those two numbers.
When @RomanSaini and I started Unacademy with @hemezh and @sumjain, the mission was to democratise education. We didn't end up capturing all the economic value of that mission. But we changed what online education looks like in this country, and the products we built became the template for the entire sector.
Unacademy's free platform created a generation of celebrity educators. Educators are a cornerstone of any economy, and they should be celebrated, and our platform enabled that in our country. Their YouTube videos crossed 10 billion views. That's a milestone I am proud of. Airlearn, in under two years, became one of the top 3 most downloaded language learning apps in the world. We always wanted to build a global consumer product out of India. We did.
With a topline of around 400 crores, most businesses profitable or near-profitable, and 900 crores in the bank, we had every option to keep going independently. Nobody was forcing this. But sometimes, you are drawn towards a path that is more exciting than the one that makes you more money.
After meeting Ronnie over the years, understanding what he's built with UpGrad in higher education, and getting inspired by his vision for education in India (and more), I always walked away with the thought that it would be fantastic to work with him. And because there was no pressure of running out of money, we could take the time to actually think it through. The more we did, the clearer it got: this is a better path for the ecosystem, not just for us.
I'm looking forward to the path ahead, and I am very sure that our shareholders will create immense value from the merger hereon. My heartfelt thanks to every employee who stayed when it would have been easier to leave. To everyone who worked with us in the past. To our educators. To our investors. To my co-founders. We did four ESOP buybacks that created real value for our employees, even though the founders and investors didn't create much for themselves in the process.
A special note to a few people without whom I would have personally given up when things got really hard: Shailendra Singh, Deepinder Goyal, Bhavin Turakhia, Sujeet Kumar, Bhavish Aggarwal, Aakrit Vaish, Mukul Arora, Shantanu Rastogi and Karthik Reddy.
Also a huge shoutout to family and friends. And most importantly, my wife Reema, and my co-founder and close friend of almost 20 years, Roman. Thanks for sticking around during my lowest and my cockiest moments. You two make me better 🌞

Some journeys take a long time to come full circle. This one started in 2020, over lunch at Taj Lands End in Mumbai, when Gaurav reached out to Mayank and me about Unacademy and upGrad coming together.
What stood out was Gaurav’s incredible level of self-confidence, but at the same time, the respect he had for what he had built and what upGrad had built. He came in proposing he could run the whole combined entity 😊. Obviously, that wasn’t something we had in mind at that stage, but the very fact that he could approach us, speak openly, share his mind and his ambitions said a lot about the quality and level of what Unacademy was building. That stayed with me.
In between, we had caught up a couple of times. On a lighter note, Gaurav came about 45 minutes late to these meets , but with a swagger, a really nice swagger. At my stage and age, it didn’t feel like I was being stood up or insulted.
But at the end of the day, relationships are built on mutual respect, trust and liking. And sometimes those relationships create the possibility of building something really Big.
Then in late July 2025 Gaurav reached out and shared where his mind was, and the crossroads at which Unacademy found itself, & what stood out again was the very transparent way in which he laid everything out and what needed to get done.
Cut to today. We’re happy to close the Acquisiton and coming together of Unacademy and upGrad.
I think there are some incredible strengths that Unacademy brings to what upGrad doesn’t have: the savviness, the product & tech first thinking, the ability to look at a completely different target audience, the brand and the resilience that the team that created this. What the team has been able to do with consumers, clients and students, and the ability to change people’s lives, is what I keep saying we are all here for. And I think that is what Unacademy stands for.
I am also very excited about Airlearn. To see a product coming out of India gaining traction globally is a great example of what is possible when the thinking, product and ambition are not limited by geography. India to the world is a very real opportunity, and Airlearn is already showing us a glimpse of it.
So this coming together is a strong message about collaboration, especially in such a high-impact, high-outcome segment like learning and looking at people’s futures. Education and learning are perhaps a little passé as words today. The bigger question is whether we are going to be a success factor for India’s workforce, India’s ambition and more.
I have a great sense of pride in having the Unacademy team come together as one. I think there are going to be some incredible synergies and some incredibly diabolically different, but very radically fresh and innovative thoughts brought to the table.
A high point. I am a firm believer that Serendipity plays a big role in almost everything you.
You just need to be in multiple places at multiple times to be in the Right Place at the Right Time on a few of those occasions. 🙏
My journey with @gauravmunjal started long before Unacademy. At CommonFloor, I acquired his company, Flatchat. One day, Gaurav came to me with the idea of Unacademy. I wanted him to stay and continue building with us, but the idea of democratizing education was so powerful, and its potential impact so meaningful, that I couldn’t say no. Instead, I wrote the first angel cheque.
Years later, I joined the journey myself: first by building Graphy, and eventually by leading the entire Test Prep business.
One of my fondest memories is travelling in an Unacademy T-shirt. At airports, CISF personnel would recognise Unacademy just from the Glyph on my T-shirt. They would come up to me and say that they had studied on Unacademy and that it had helped them crack their exams.
Somehow, those conversations made long flights feel shorter and warmer. That was the power of the brand we had built and the impact it had created.
We built products that were loved by users and competitors alike. We probably helped our competitors hire fewer product managers because of us. :)
Over the years, we did four ESOP buybacks, including our most recent ₹50 crore buyback just a few months ago. We always tried to do right by our people. Even during layoffs, some of the hardest decisions we ever had to make, we went above and beyond when it came to severance and other benefits.
Unacademy’s Free Platform created a generation of celebrity educators, while our YouTube videos have been watched over 10 billion times. Our Live Courses Subscription model went on to become the industry norm. Graphy today empowers creators across the world and does over ₹400 crore in Annual GMV, while PrepLadder has become the go-to platform for medical students.
A heartfelt thank you to all our current team members who stood by us and didn’t abandon the ship through the toughest times; to everyone who has been part of our journey over the years; to our incredible educators; to my co-founders; and to our investors who believed in us and backed us along the way.
When I look back at where it all started, the simple idea of democratizing education, and the millions of lives we touched along the way, I think we can say one thing with a smile:
We did crack it. 🙂

Thank you, Gaurav. What a ride the last 6 years have been! Something I would never trade for anything else.
Amazing discussions, learning, and memories along the way.
Proud to be a Co-Founder of a company that has been the first in doing so many things and set a benchmark for excellence.

Unacademy and upGrad have signed a term sheet for upGrad to acquire Unacademy in a 100% share swap deal.
Neither side will disclose the valuation until closing, when the papers are filed and the transaction becomes public.
In the last one year, a lot has happened at Unacademy:
- We consolidated company operated centres with franchise partners so we could refocus on what we do best, building great online education products
- We completed a ₹50 crore ESOP buyback and nearly 40% of former employees have already participated
- Airlearn, our first global product, is gaining meaningful traction in the US, UK, Germany and Canada
- Our Cash Reserves as of today are more than $100M
I will be staying back as Co-Founder and CEO Unacademy - with the Goal to build Great Online Products for Learners in India and Globally.
Unacademy helped invent the Modern EdTech Playbook. Along the way we lost some focus and market share, and the sector itself has not seen enough real product innovation in recent years.
AI will fundamentally reshape education, and EdTech may become one of its biggest beneficiaries. The opportunity to reimagine learning products has never been greater.
I have long admired what @RonnieScrewvala and the upGrad team have built. They have quietly but relentlessly established themselves in the upskilling, lifelong learning and higher education space.
If & when we do come together, we share upGrad’s belief that ‘The Whole is bigger than the Sum of Parts’ and altogether we will impact students, learners and working professionals & build great Products from K12 to Forever Learning.
The next chapter for education is only beginning.
At Unacademy, we started with a simple belief, every learner with ambition should have access to great education.
Over the last few months, we have continued to strengthen this mission across both online and offline learning.
To strengthen our offline classroom programs, we have partnered with strong local operators to further scale Unacademy Centres. Through these partnerships, we now have 80+ Unacademy Centres across 60+ cities in India, bringing quality preparation closer to more learners.
Our online programs also continue to show strong results.
In JEE Main Session 1, 1051 Unacademy learners scored 99 percentile and above. And in UPSC CSE 2025, the All India Rank 1 is also an Unacademy learner. These are proud moments for every learner, educator, and the team at Unacademy.
As we continue to evolve our learning ecosystem - both online and offline, our focus remains to help learners across the country to prepare well, and move closer to their goals.
Unacademy has initiated an ESOP buyback of 50 crores.
The journey hasn’t been easy. While our valuation today is lower than our last fundraise, we’ve tried to do the best we can for our team members.
Grateful to the Board for carving out a cash pool to make this possible. Over 25 team members will receive 50L+ each.
We’re working to extend this to as many team members as possible and will be reaching out to everyone eligible soon.
Let’s keep cracking it!

Unacademy turns 10 today
I thought it's a good occasion to jot down some thoughts on this day about the wild ride that we have gone through.
Ten years ago, we started with a simple mission: to empower great educators and make their content accessible to everyone.
This is when the company was started. Unacademy started as a YouTube channel in 2010, 15 years ago. When I was in the 3rd year of my college. And I started making videos on computer science to help my friends.
It continued as a side project with @RomanSaini joining in 2014, and us blitzscaling the YouTube channel. His UPSC videos would get millions of views that helped us in becoming the number one education channel in the country.
We thought that the biggest problem then was that the smartest people are not teaching, and we need a platform where we'll get the best educators who'll create videos for learners for free. Kind of like what Twitch had done to gaming, we wanted to do that to education. Create a YouTube-like platform.
And on 10th December 2015, Unacademy was launched.
For the first four years, we kept adding more and more great educators to the platform, which would lead to millions of learners joining the platform. There was a point in 2018 when we were doing millions of views per month on our own platform, with Unacademy being the number one education app on the Play Store. And it was all organic growth, because we had a rule to not spend money on performance marketing.
These were exciting times. Roman would personally go to the houses of potential educators to convince them to start teaching on an Unacademy. That's how some of the best educators joined the platform.
From the beginning, we always thought of ourselves as a tech company operating in education. Unlike every other player in the market which behaved like an education company using tech to enable them. That's why we had features like streaks, knowledge hats, and a lot of gamification built in for educators and learners. Educators would get massively addicted to the knowledge hats which the learners would gift them on crossing certain milestones.
Even till today, some of the biggest educators that we have are the ones who grew on the free platform that we had built as our first product.
Then, in 2019, just one year before Covid hit, we launched a subscription product where learners could buy a subscription and get access to live classes from the best educators for their exam. The product was an instant hit. From zero revenue in January 2019 to $1.8M revenue in September 2019, we were one of the fastest growing companies to get to almost $20M Bookings ARR in nine months.
The next one year was crazy because our revenue kept scaling and especially post-Covid, we were growing even faster. Almost 1M Paid Subscribers were now enrolled on Unacademy. There were three back-to-back funding rounds. From being a $100M valuation at the start of 2019, we were at a $1.5B valuation by September 2020.
We had spent less than $50M to reach a valuation of $1.5B.
But soon the distractions began.
In the next few months, we did another round, ended up raising another $440 million. Totalling the fund raise to more than $700 million in just less than two years. We thought that what we are seeing in COVID would sustain forever and that's the new reality. And started burning a lot of money to acquire a lot of market share, without realizing that education business is slightly different from a normal tech business, and here your first transaction is basically your LTV.
We had become the number one test prep brand in terms of recall. We were the number one test prep player in terms of online business, which had scaled to almost $100M in revenue.
Thanks @gauravmunjal. It has been a pleasure building Unacademy with @RomanSaini and you. Here’s to many more years of Partnership 🥂
Happy to announce that @sumjain is now the CEO of our Test Prep Business.
