Something hilarious happened for us old-school rhythm game veterans. kors k suddenly posted that he’d been searching forever for this old African-style vocal sample that goes something like, “JABATTO JABA DETE JABA HEH-HEH!!” Then DJ Hyuji managed to identify the original sample, and it looks like kors k was finally able to get back to work on the track. But when I saw the video he uploaded, I couldn’t help but grin. Yep. THAT sample. It’s the one used in AFRONOVA from DDR 3rdMIX!! Back in the day, Japanese players even had a famous misheard-lyrics version of it: “Dobatto mazemaze choco banana!” 😂 I’m pretty sure every member of the DDR old-timers club who saw kors k’s original post immediately thought, “…That has to be AFRONOVA.” And yes, I was absolutely one of them. And AFRONOVA has quite a history in BEMANI. Later, AFRONOVA PRIMEVAL first appeared in DanceManiaX, and was subsequently included in DDR 5thMIX. PRIMEVAL also made its way to the original 5-key beatmania and pop’n music. And some pop’n music players might recognize it as the third track in “DDR MEGAMIX.” Then in DDRMAX2, we also got AFRONOVA (FROM NONSTOP MEGAMIX). Seeing that legendary vocal sample suddenly resurface in kors k’s music production all these years later is just way too perfect for us rhythm game veterans.
