In late 2019 a man in Michigan paid $70 for a worn couch from a thrift store. Howard Kirby was looking for an inexpensive living room set. His house was in poor condition and the roof was leaking so badly it needed an expensive replacement he could not afford.
For several weeks the unusually firm cushion never became comfortable. Eventually he unzipped the cover. Instead of old foam he found thick bundles of hundred-dollar bills. Hidden inside was $43,170 in cash, the forgotten savings of a man who had already died.
Lawyers confirmed that because he had bought the couch outright, the money legally belonged to him. No one was likely to come looking for it. Kirby could see the stacks of cash and at the same time look up at his leaking ceiling. Still he said, “It wasn’t mine.”
He returned to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and asked them to help find the family who had donated the couch. They found Kim Fauth-Newberry. The couch had belonged to her late grandfather, who had quietly hidden his life savings inside the cushions. After his death the family had donated the furniture without realizing the money was still there.
Kirby met the family and returned every dollar. Once word of his honesty spread, local contractors learned that the man who had just given away more than $43,000 was living under a badly damaged roof. A roofing company donated all the materials and labor to replace it at no cost. Neighbors also organized a fundraiser for some of his other expenses.
Kirby had every legal right to keep the money. Keeping it would have made his life much easier. He chose not to, simply because he knew it was never his to keep. It was a quiet choice to do what he believed was right when no one was there to make him.

Burkina Faso is investing in the minds of its young girls.
Instead of beauty pageants, 84 young girls competed in mathematics, physics and chemistry in a science competition designed to promote STEM education and challenge the notion that these fields are only for men.
The top five performers in each subject received prizes, with the first-place winners taking home 2 million CFA francs, a motorcycle, a laptop and other rewards.
Every finalist also received a scholarship and university support to help develop the skills Burkina Faso needs for its future.
A nation that invests in the minds of its girls is investing in its future.
This is how you empower the next generation — through knowledge, science, opportunity and education 🇧🇫

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.
I will not be silenced.

There are 5 words - contained in a sentence- used by politicians of all parties - when backed into a corner.
Guaranteed to switch me - and many others - into deep cynical mode.
The universal free pass used by all politicians - contained in the phrase :
"Let me be very clear ...."

Hero .. : They saw a 77-year-old woman alone at an ATM in Bromborough, England — and thought she was an easy target.
Winifred Peel was withdrawing her money when three teenagers closed in.
One shoved her out of the way. Another lunged for the cash. They were expecting a helpless victim.
They picked the wrong woman.
Winifred grabbed 19-year-old Felix Stoica by the collar and smashed his head into the ATM — not once, but THREE times. He was left bloodied, and that blood plus the CCTV sealed the fate of the whole gang.
Within days, all three were in handcuffs. Felix Stoica, Florin Geblescu and Piper Dumitru admitted to the robbery and were sent to prison.
Later, Winifred said her time in the gym is what gave her the strength to fight back. She admitted the attack rattled her, but she was never going to let them walk away with her money.
They thought her age made her weak.
They learned the hard way that courage doesn't fade with age — and you should never underestimate a 77-year-old woman.

Anti-Zionism is a 'protected philosophical belief' under S10 of the Equality Act, which it is the EHRC's job to enforce.
Polanski should remind them of their statutory responsibilities, and then tell them to f*ck off.

A 5-year-old girl plunged 49 feet from a moving cruise ship into the open ocean. Her father heard his wife screaming and raced toward the railing, only to discover that their daughter was gone.
It happened aboard the Disney Dream near the Bahamas, where a family vacation took a terrifying turn when the little girl fell from the ship’s fourth deck.
When her father realized what had happened, he jumped overboard after her, plunging nearly 50 feet into the ocean. But when he surfaced, he couldn’t see his daughter anywhere.
He began desperately calling out for her, searching the water until he finally heard her calling back. He swam toward her and managed to reach her, but they were still stranded in the open ocean as the massive cruise ship began turning around.
For roughly 20 minutes, he kept his little girl afloat, holding her above the water until a rescue boat finally reached them and brought them back to safety.
Both survived, although the father suffered two fractures in his spine from the fall.
It takes an incredible amount of courage to jump nearly 50 feet into the open ocean, not knowing what awaits you below. But this father didn’t hesitate to put his own life on the line for his little girl. Thank God they both made it home.

In 1948, a photo summarized centuries of injustice. The man in suit and tie, standing before photographers, broke into tears. He was George Gillette, leader of the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa tribes of the Missouri River.
The document in his hands was not a negotiated settlement. It was the forced secession of ancestral lands from his people to the U.S. government. More than 150,000 native ancestral acres, full of homes, schools, churches, and fertile fields. The US government forced him to hand over the land so they could flood it all by building the Garrison dam.
Gillette knew that with his signature he sealed a permanent tragedy. But if he didn’t, the tribes would receive NO compensation, The US government would simply take the land. Through tears he said "Today we sign under protest. Our hands are tied, but our hearts are sad."
The dam flooded entire villages, erased old communities, and buried centuries of indigenous history.
We must not whitewash American history in our schools.

The Royal Family don't do real work like a Teacher or a Nurse says Lord Foulkes and they should have their pay streamlined like the European Royal families instead of getting £137.9m for ribbon cutting.
Absolutely the Danish King and Queen get only £0.5m a year.

The UK is a rogue state. Worse, a failed state. Its institutions from the Palace through the parliament to the police and virtually the whole public realm are unfit for purpose. That is why I now support independence for Scotland and Wales and as I always have the reunification of Ireland. Cutting Little England down to size is necessary but not sufficient for national recovery.
