The history of East Germany is one of endless rabbit holes. Take the story of Gerhard Müller, the inventor of the roof tent. He overcame many obstacles to produce 1800 tents but went bankrupt in the 90s when nobody wanted them anymore. He died in 1999--in his car, roof tent on.
