The Hope Florida Scandal in a Nutshell: 1. Centene, a Medicaid contractor, overbilled Florida. In 2024 the state settled for $67 million. That's taxpayer money owed back to the people of Florida. 2. Instead of all of it going to the state, $10 million was carved out and sent to the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity tied to Casey DeSantis's signature program. 3. Within days, the charity split the $10 million between two nonprofits. Those two nonprofits then handed $8.5 million to a political committee called Keep Florida Clean, which was fighting the 2024 marijuana ballot measure. That committee was run by James Uthmeier, then DeSantis's chief of staff. 4. So Medicaid money meant for Florida taxpayers went charity, to nonprofit, to political campaign, in about a week. The people who signed off: Uthmeier, and then-Attorney General Ashley Moody, who the grand jury says knew about the plan and authorized the settlement. 5. A grand jury investigated for a year and concluded the money was "misappropriated" and "misused for political purposes." But they couldn't pin down who made the call, so no charges. The report was sealed. CBS Miami got it and published it this week. Where everyone landed: DeSantis appointed Moody to the U.S. Senate and Uthmeier to Attorney General. Both are on the ballot in November. The deputy who signed the settlement got a state appeals court seat. DeSantis's response? The only crime here is that somebody leaked the report. Ten million dollars of Medicaid money ended up in a political campaign, and the governor's problem is that you found out.
