At around 2 a.m. local time, Israeli forces bombed an apartment where the Yassin family was sheltering near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, killing Akram and his wife. “I wish I had slept between you, so I would have been killed alongside you and Dad,” the couple’s daughter said as she bid farewell to her parents.

In 60 years, Viv has never spoken publicly about what happened to his brother, until this anniversary. I know you know this picture. All adult people who've carried some of the pain of this world for others do. 58 years ago this month, three men stood on an Olympic podium in Mexico City. Two of them, courageous to a level most people will never reach or even aspire to reach, became famous for raising their fists. The third didn't raise his fist. But he knew exactly what was happening. 16 October 1968. The Olympic Games in Mexico City. The United States is being torn apart by racial conflict. Martin Luther King has been murdered six months earlier. Black Americans are still fighting for rights that other Americans take for granted. Two American sprinters, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, have just won gold and bronze in the 200 metres. Between them stands a 26-year-old white Australian called Peter Norman. Norman has run the race of his life. He's won SILVER, beating Carlos, one of the overwhelming favourites. His time of 20.06 seconds is so astonishing that it will remain the Australian national record for another 56 years. He should be thinking about his medal, his future, the applause, the extraordinary doors that might open for him. But Smith and Carlos have something else on their minds. They're planning to protest racial injustice during the medal ceremony. In front of the entire world. And they tell Norman what they're going to do. Norman is Australian. The American civil rights movement isn't his fight. He could simply stand there, smile politely, collect his silver medal and go home. Nobody would ever know that he had been given an opportunity to demonstrate moral courage and declined it. But Norman asks the Americans what he can do to help. And he tells them: "I'll stand with you." There's a practical problem. Smith and Carlos have planned to wear black gloves, but Carlos has forgotten his pair. Norman suggests something beautifully simple. Why don't they share the remaining pair? One glove each. That's why, in the famous photograph, Smith raises his RIGHT fist and Carlos raises his LEFT. The Australian also finds himself an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. He pins it to his tracksuit. And the three men step onto the podium. The American national anthem begins. Smith and Carlos bow their heads and raise their fists. Norman stands beside them. A small white man in an Australian tracksuit, wearing a tiny badge. It doesn't look particularly spectacular. No shouting. No violence. No great revolutionary speech. Just three men saying, in their own ways, that human beings deserve to be treated as human beings. And the sporting establishment goes NUTS. Smith and Carlos are expelled from the Games. They're denounced, threatened and treated as traitors for daring to make people uncomfortable during a sporting event. Norman returns to Australia. His country has its own ugly history of racial exclusion, particularly concerning its Indigenous population. And there are plenty of Australians who aren't particularly thrilled that their Olympic silver medallist has associated himself with two Black American protesters. Norman encounters hostility and ostracism in parts of the sporting world. Four years later, he isn't selected for the Munich Olympics. Norman never repudiates what he did. Peter Norman dies in 2006, aged 64. At his funeral in Melbourne, two men have travelled all the way from America. Tommie Smith. John Carlos. The two Black American athletes he had supported 38 years earlier. And they carry his coffin. Carlos told the mourners that Norman hadn't stood in front of them or behind them. He had stood WITH them. In 2012, the Australian Parliament finally apologised for Norman's treatment and its failure to recognise his courage while he was alive. Forty-four years after the protest. Six years after the man was dead. One day governments will offer apologies to journalists sacked for holding Israeli officials' feet to the fire. Hopefully before they die.

It is worth noting that this announcement comes one month after new director Luke Lindberg took over as executive director of the World Food Program. Lindberg was handpicked by Donald Trump, having worked in the US department of agriculture. He is a proud backer of wanted war-criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, and an 'America First' proponent who sees it as a priority to export US agricultural products through the humanitarian system. And here he is in 2023 proudly posting a picture of himself with a US-made sniper rifle to be sent to israel, the country currently committing genocide in Gaza, as the WFP reduces food aid.
🚨 BREAKING: Half a million Palestinians in Gaza will lose monthly food assistance as funding shortages force major World Food Programme cuts ahead of winter, ABC News Australia reports. ➤ WFP is reducing its monthly reach from 1.6 million people to 1.1 million. Families receiving two food parcels will now get one, and flour bags will shrink. ➤ Daily hot meals have fallen from 250,000 to 150,000. Some families in hard-to-reach areas will receive meals every other day instead of daily. Cash assistance for 75,000 families is being cut by 40%. ➤ WFP’s Carl Skau said traditional donors, including the U.S. and Europe, have reduced funding. “It’s not because the needs are down … it’s only due to the lack of funding,” Skau told ABC. ➤ Around 1.4 million people face crisis-level hunger or worse, including 200,000 in emergency conditions. WFP says it urgently needs $450 million for six months of operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

When celebrity protest was costly and not done for naughty vibes and extra followers. 34 years ago this month, an Irish woman committed an act of defiance on American television that would make her one of the most hated celebrities in the world. She tried to get people to pay attention to children being abused by the very institution that claimed to be their moral guardian. On 3 October 1992, Sinéad O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live, one of America's most popular television programmes. She was 25 years old. Two years earlier, Nothing Compares 2 U had made her a global superstar. She had an extraordinary voice, enormous commercial potential and a future that could have made her fabulously wealthy. Every incentive in the entertainment industry told her to keep smiling, singing, looking pretty and making money. Instead, she chose to make people profoundly uncomfortable. She performed Bob Marley's War, completely alone, without instrumental accompaniment, changing the lyrics to explicitly condemn child abuse. At the end, she held up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. And tore it to pieces. "FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY!" Silence. The audience didn't know what to do. Neither did the producers, who had no idea she was planning this. Within days, the machinery of outrage was operating at full capacity. Sinéad had insulted Catholics! She had insulted the Pope! She had insulted religion! How DARE this young woman with a shaved head disrespect something so sacred? Funny how much more offended people could get about a torn photograph than about children being raped and abused by people entrusted with their care. Actor Joe Pesci subsequently appeared on the same programme and declared that, had he been there, he would have given her a smack. The audience laughed and applauded. A grown man threatening to hit a woman for protesting child abuse. Apparently THAT was entertainment. Madonna criticised her. People destroyed her records. Her career suffered enormously. Two weeks later, she appeared at Madison Square Garden for a concert honouring Bob Dylan. Thousands of people had come to celebrate a musician whose reputation rested partly on decades of songs about injustice, rebellion and refusing to submit to authority. And when Sinéad appeared, a substantial part of the audience BOOED her. For having actually rebelled. Kris Kristofferson approached her and told her not to let the bastards get her down. "I'm not down," she replied. And instead of singing the Bob Dylan song she had prepared, she launched into War AGAIN. What happened in the following decades? Investigations revealed extensive sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy and institutional efforts to conceal it. Sinéad wasn't attacking the ordinary believer who found comfort in religion. She was confronting the immense power of an institution whose moral authority had protected perpetrators and helped silence victims.

What began as a children’s concert in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Kheir ended in confrontation. Shortly after the Sotna music project’s ceremony began, Israeli soldiers declared the area a closed military zone and ordered residents to leave. As the crowd dispersed, a settler drove toward Palestinians, including children, and assaulted a resident. | Tal Elkayam instagram.com/haaretzcom/

This is Ain al-Hilweh, my camp. The rubbish, the neglect, the indignity. Palestinian refugees have human rights too. The rubbish and neglect raise serious questions about access to sanitation, the right to health and the right to adequate living conditions under international human-rights law. Meanwhile, colonisers live on my land, Palestine, protected and supported by Western powers, while my people remain refugees in Lebanon, denied their Right of Return. Sometimes I feel like I’m standing alone for our refugees. Is there anyone out there willing to stand with me and help make a difference? Please reach out. 🇵🇸

An unexpected storm swept through Gaza today, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds. It is only mid October, and already displaced families are facing the devastating reality of another winter without adequate shelter. Support here: chuffed.org/project/149178-s… This is the fourth winter of genocide. For the next several months, thousands of families will be forced to endure freezing temperatures, relentless rain, and flooding in dilapidated tents that can barely withstand a passing shower. Tents that have been patched together again and again, their fabric torn, their foundations weakened, offering little protection from the elements. We cannot wait for catastrophe to strike before we act. Preparation is survival. The Sameer Project is working to winterize displacement camps across Gaza. We need to purchase new tents for families whose shelters are beyond repair, reinforce existing tents, and fortify vulnerable areas with sandbags to redirect floodwaters before they destroy what little families have left. Every flooded tent means children sleeping in freezing, soaked bedding. Every collapsed shelter means another family left exposed to the elements. Winterization cannot wait until winter. It must happen NOW. Donate to The Sameer Project's Rebuild Gaza Campaign and help us prepare families for the difficult months ahead: chuffed.org/project/149178-s…. Your solidarity today can prevent suffering tomorrow.
