A fifth wheel is used to help parallel park in 1933.
Brooks Walker was the inventor of the fifth wheel and received a patent for it in 1935. He spent the remainder of his life trying to get the automobile industry to adopt his invention.
In 1952, Walker tried to sell it to Cadillac for $175 ($1,957 when adjusted for inflation), however, they refused because the device took up almost all of the trunk space. The next year, he was able to add the fifth wheel without sacrificing trunk space, but Cadillac still declined.
Walker refused to give up on his invention and continued to add the fifth wheel to a wide variety of cars such as the Ford station wagon, Oldsmobile station wagon, Saab Sedan, and many more. The modifications needed to add the fifth wheel were quite extensive and often required Walker to change the seating arrangement and extend the rear fender.
It also did not help that the rapid suburbanization of the United States after World War II meant that Americans had more opportunities to park in garages and parking lots. While parallel parking was still necessary, it did not justify consumers from shelling out extra money to add on Walker's fifth wheel.
