If you're shopping for workwear-inspired outerwear this season — whether a Barbour, barn coat, or French chore jacket — I encourage you to consider vintage first. Old clothes often have a patina that cubicle farmers are unlikely to ever achieve on their own. That patina is what gives these styles their charm.
For instance, this 1993 Bedale at Jojo's General Store in Sheffield has the most wonderful wear patterns, along with a detachable teddy bear lining for extra warmth.
Of course, vintage clothes sometimes come with undesirable smells. Rave FabriCARE in Scottsdale, Arizona, can handle most cleaning needs, while New England Reproofers is my choice for waxed cotton. Cleaning and rewaxing an old Barbour will invariably remove some of its patina, but enough will remain to make the jacket look more charming than something bought new.
