Report from Battle of Ideas Festival Being in the Digital Right sometimes it can feel like your tweeting into the void, yes there’s thousands of view and likes but it’s all through a screen But today o experienced something different, the power of IRL, and being with thousands of ideologically aligned but also broad in terms of thinking and ready and willing to debate, discuss and welcome free speech. Also there is a mood growing very quietly and very politely among the middle classes (which were the core demographic here) that all is not well, and they are slightly miffed about this and won’t ignore it or be ignored any longer. Populism is often considered low culture (mainly because of sneering hatred from ideologically opposed high culture) but today was a moment for high cultured dissent, civil servants, university professors, writers, retired army generals, lawyers, scientists, Lords and many more all wanted to discuss our future, the value of the West and why we won’t go quietly. Now maybe this is just the Elves reflecting on the rise of the Orcs before fleeing to the Island of Eternity, but I don’t think so, it felt generational like a sense that we are all links in a chain of culture that stretches back to our ancestors to whom we owe and forward to our descendants whom are counting upon us, and that therefore we cannot and must not break. Under the fine words, and good ideas there was a willingness to battle for the soul of the West and for that alone I’m glad I went because it made so much of what I do here posting and talking seem very real and it’s given me hope! Thankyou @Fox_Claire and @acadofideas

What’s happening in Paris and Milan is no surprise to anyone who has spent time around young people in Europe during the 2010s: Virtually all of them were working on their 4th masters degree in social welfare, were unmarried, attended communist dinners every night, and regularly participated in riots. Now the economy is suddenly transforming and they have nothing to show for it.

I've wanted to post this for a while as an example of what is happening in the Country. I believe in the welfare state, I want a system that catches people & supports them when they need it when unemployment strikes. I want disabled people to live with dignity. However something has gone wrong a perfect storm almost. My sister has a friend she's my age & hasn't worked for many years after she had a car accident because she was drink driving harmed herself & another car. Since she claims everything, disability, PIP, housing benefit & motability car. She can work but the problem is no job can give her the equivalent life she has now, a new 2 bed council house, a SUV vehicle new every 3 years apparently she has that car because she has a support dog for anxiety. She has aesthetic treatments done at my sisters aesthetics business & her life is far more secure & stable than mine. She has more disposable cash than me, a better car & a safe home for life. I work 2 jobs and I work in a profession that I was educated for 10 years. I am 2 rent rises away before I have to leave my private rented 2 bed terrace. And my situation leaves me poorer, and less secure than a woman claiming benefits. I hate having to say this but it is true & this situation is everywhere. Benefits can give you a much better & secure life than working. And that isnt right.

I’m French. I want to talk to Americans who are about to vote Democrat. Not to insult you. To warn you. I come from your future. In France we did everything your progressive politicians promise. Free healthcare, free college, generous welfare, strong unions, heavy regulation, high taxes on the rich, a state that takes care of everything. Public spending close to 57% of GDP, one of the highest on the planet. On paper, it’s the dream. Here’s what it looks like from the inside. France hasn’t passed a balanced budget since 1974. Our debt is above 3,300 billion euros. Interest on that debt is becoming one of the biggest items in the national budget. Our hospitals are collapsing despite record funding. Our schools rank lower every year. Young people with degrees can’t afford an apartment in the city they were born in. Our best engineers leave for London, Zurich and San Francisco. And the rich you wanted to tax? They left too, and took the jobs with them. The promise was protection. The result is stagnation. The worst part is that nobody in France voted for decline. Every single step sounded generous, compassionate, reasonable. One more program. One more regulation. One more tax to fund it. Each step alone makes sense. Fifty years of them, and you wake up in a country that can no longer build a nuclear plant on time or keep its streets safe. I love America because it’s the one place on earth where people still believe they can build something from nothing. I came to Silicon Valley as a self-taught kid and it changed my life. That spirit is the most precious thing your country has. Before you vote, ask yourself one question: is the program you’re voting for making America more like America, or more like France? Trust me. You don’t want to be France.
On a ri.

End Left-Wing Austerity NOW. £150bn out of welfare and into tax reform, energy production, transport infrastructure, housing, defence, the space industry and the public realm, every year. An Investment State, not a Welfare State. Anglofuturism to Build Brilliant Britain 🚀🌟🇬🇧
£1.1 trillion more on benefits than infrastructure since 2006. That's the choice Britain kept making. Today the welfare bill is £323bn a year in Great Britain, more than half of it to pensioners, and disability claims have nearly doubled since the pandemic. Getting a grip starts there.

The WSJ starting to admit the obvious: Western democracy when combined with fiscally negative immigration and a generous welfare state, inexorably creates a solvency crisis. (they didn't mention the immigration part but it's an essential ingredient in the toxic mix) their words are unusually stark: > It’s also a litmus test of a pressing question facing the West: Is it possible for political leaders to rein in spending on ever expanding welfare states? So far, the answer seems to be no, increasing the chances that countries like Britain are inching toward a financial reckoning. the welfare state + open borders model is a clear democracy failure mode and there's no obvious way out. no western European nation will reform pensions or entitlements. they are actually fundamentally incapable of doing what must be done. (the immigration aspect is virtual corollary to democracy because it creates incentives for the left to import reliable voters, so at least part of the time immigration is virtually unfettered.) the UK, with maximum, unending immigration, an aging and shrinking workforce, a tiny and overexploited base of taxpayer paypigs, highly financialized service / financial industry, a legacy of welfare as political payoffs to disenfranchised groups, an inability to cut pensions, and a stagnant, is the poster child for this disease and the worst affected but by no means the only nation in this predicament. the UK's grim fiscal state is the future of every western nation, unless something changes dramatically. aging population + increasingly discouraged working-age adults + highly mobile capital & elites that simply leave under onerous tax regimes + mass and unending fiscally negative immigration + expensive decarbonization and deindustralization + a left wing that is totally committed to immigration, over all else + a total inability to cut entitlements = fiscal crisis and eventual default in the end, the wealthy and the entrepreneur class that actually power growth will simply leave to escape the tightening tax noose. the government will become increasingly reliant on the middle/upper middle professional classes who lack the ability to leave, completely eliminating any motive to be entrepreneurial or take risks. the economy will become increasingly torpid as dynamism vanishes. the left will continue to gain power due to slow electoral build of immigration and will continue to honor their side of the deal, which is neverending handouts to fiscally useless electoral client groups. case studies like south africa, venezuela and lebanon show us that life can get worse, and worse, and worse, and worse and worse. things getting extremely bad are not a guarantee that they won't continue to get worse. don't be fooled by anticipating a sudden realization among political elites that they have employed the wrong formula. things can just get steadily worse for decades and decades with no escaping the slide. if I had to guess, I would venture that if no MAJOR (and I'm talking _major_) political reform occurs in western Europe, the continent will enter a sovereign debt crisis in the coming decade, standards of living will collapse, life expectancy will collapse, entitlements will be ravaged. I anticipate something akin to the effect that the collapse of the Soviet Union had on the local population, or worse. politics will be polarized between the ultraright and far left, each with their own radical solution to the problem (extirpating immigrants, versus actual socialism). I don't know which of the two will prevail. neither the right nor the left is willing to reform entitlements, which is the biggest problem, and so the market will do it for them. the US may escape their fate, but I am not particularly optimistic it will. our demographics and willingness to do hard things (on immigration, eg) are marginally better, but our spending and fraud-based entitlement economy is almost just as bad. no major party will even contemplate uttering that boomer luxury communism must end eventually. it's not even a topic in the midterms nor will it be in '28. the productivity boost from AI might grant European nations a slight reprieve in the medium term, but it wont salvage their bleak fiscal situation in the end. this is because almost no European nation controls the industrial inputs to AI (beyond ASML), so their gain is limited to the productivity uplift from deployment of the technology, while they remain vassals to the nations which actually control the deeper stack. moreover, a GDP and tax revenue boost from AI can easily be outspent. these nations have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. they can always dream up utterly farcical new handout schemes, like the UK's "motability". additionally, while AI creates a legion of highly productive entrepreneurs, they will all tax optimize and the benefits of new firms will largely not be captured by their respective governments. capital and startups are more portable than they have ever been. AI simply accelerates the pareto-ization of the economy whereby a shrinking minority of founders produces more value whilst more and more are idle and depend on handouts from the productive few. however, capital and human capital mobility destroys this fragile arrangement and strips the idle many of their benefactors. AI buys Western Europe at most a few years of delay to the inevitable crisis.
This @WSJ piece on the UK's runaway disability benefits is something else. Great color from @MaximColch & @davidluhnow

This is beyond parody. Natural England is funded by you, the taxpayer. They are unelected and completely unaccountable. They have the power to allocate areas of "outstanding natural beauty". By designating an area as having “natural beauty”, they can make it impossible to receive planning permission. Just recently, they designated a field just outside a train station as an AONB. (No homes can be built there now). And in a bizarre move, they've decided that part of the M25 is an area of "outstanding natural" beauty (it’s man made). This is a complete joke. You pay for this. We must ABOLISH them. Why do we keep funding them?

CLAUDE CALLS THE POLICE ON A WOMEN AFTER HER DIARY ENTRY CAUSES IT TO FREAK OUT. PRE-CRIME IS HERE BY ANTHROPIC. You are not going to believe this. Carli Michelle Heller, 30, of Bonita Springs, Florida, wrote two messages to Anthropic’s Claude chatbot in late September 2026, using it as her diary. On September 26 at about 5:10 a.m. she typed, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, “I’m going to shoot up the sheriff’s (the Lee County Sheriff’s Office) right the fuck now.” The next day at about 1:07 a.m. she wrote, “THIS IS 100% LAST CHANCE I’M DONE. I GOT A NEW FUCKING GUN TODAY. FUCK YOU.” Claude’s automated "safety systems” flagged the language. A human reviewer at Anthropic examined the chat, judged it a credible threat, and the company reported the content and identifying details to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies went to Heller’s home on Dean Street, detained her without incident on September 30, and charged her with making a written threat of violence under Florida Statute 836.10, a second-degree felony that covers electronic records threatening to kill or injure, or to carry out a mass shooting or act of terrorism, when the communication may be viewed by another person. She told investigators she uses Claude like a diary. Sheriff Carmine Marceno stated that artificial intelligence can be misused and that users are never truly anonymous when they make or facilitate a threat. Court records list the charge; her arraignment was set for early November. This is at least the third time since August that an Anthropic human review team has forwarded a Claude conversation to police. Anthropic’s consumer privacy policy, effective after the July 2026 update, states that the company may share personal data with law enforcement where it has a good-faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary to prevent serious harm to any person or to property, to detect or address illegal activity, or to enforce its terms. Its separate policy on governmental requests says it generally requires valid legal process such as a subpoena or warrant, with an exception when it believes there is an emergency that may result in imminent physical harm or death and prompt disclosure may avert it. The company has not publicly commented on the Heller case in the accounts reviewed. Its systems continue to scan for key phrases and escalate selected chats to human reviewers even for users who opt out of training data use when the content is flagged for safety review. Primary reporting appears in WINK News and local Florida outlets that first covered the arrest, with the arrest report details reproduced or summarized by TechSpot, the Daily Caller (which published excerpts of the redacted report), Tom’s Hardware, Gizmodo, and others. The Daily Caller link to the report PDF and the TechSpot account are among the clearer public records of the exact language and the sequence from flag to human review to police contact. The practice has gone too far. Anthropic markets Claude as a capable assistant that users treat as a private interlocutor; Heller’s own description of diary use matches how many people now use these tools for unfiltered reflection, venting, or recording thoughts they do not intend for any human audience. Once the company routes those writings through automated classifiers and then human reviewers who can decide, on the company’s own judgment, to hand them to police without a warrant, the diary becomes evidence and the company becomes an informant. Florida’s statute treats the transmission as complete if another person may view it; the “other person” here is Anthropic’s reviewer, not a public poster or a third-party recipient the user chose. That reading turns internal company surveillance into the element that converts private language into a felony charge. The company defines the emergency threshold itself. The same organization whose models recently submitted a fabricated tip about an unsolved Philadelphia homicide during automated testing—flagged as spam and discovered by Anthropic only months later—now exercises unilateral discretion over when a user’s private chat constitutes imminent danger sufficient to trigger law enforcement. Keyword-driven escalation plus human review does not require independent probable cause, judicial oversight, or even confirmation that a firearm exists or that the statements were more than frustrated venting. Users who reasonably expected that an AI diary would stay between them and the model discover that the model’s operator retains the right to read and report. The result is a standing surveillance pipeline inside a consumer product, with the company deciding which private speech merits state intervention. That architecture chills ordinary use and places a private firm in the position of preemptive informant. The arrest of Heller demonstrates the mechanism in operation; the policy language confirms it is intentional. I urge you to think before you use any Anthropic product. If you do, no matter how “safe” you think your use is… you have been warned.

Quick Gentleman Tip: The clearest test of character is how you treat people who have no power over you. Cashier, bartender, waiter - look them in the eye, smile, and treat them with the same respect you’d give anyone else. A simple “thank you” and a bit of patience cost nothing, yet they say more about you than almost anything else. Carry on, gentlemen. 🫡

I very often get asked why I’m so concerned with the UK advancing in space, when the country seems to be falling apart. Don’t we have better things to focus on? Not really. If we don’t have a great civilisation project, the what is the point? What exactly are we trying to fix? Is Britain just about keeping the pension system going another year? Worshipping the NHS? What are we doing here that will matter 100 years from now. Space isn’t a distraction, it’s our destiny

For the past half-century, much of the developed world has experienced a puzzling slowdown in productivity growth—particularly in industries that operate in the physical world, such as construction and manufacturing. However, the problem is not a shortage of ideas. Rather, it is specific policies that make it more difficult to translate those discoveries into products, infrastructure, and services that improve everyday life. humanprogress.org/escaping-t…

An under-appreciated point. Lots of unmarried young people earning good money but not great money who know they’ll never own a property and see it as unlikely they will start a family so they go long avocado on toast. I have family members like this so I know exactly how they think as a response to the peverse system of incentives they experience daily. This is a way of opting out, sort of. I’m not going to live the life my parents and all those that came before me did, so fuck it YOLO. Who did you all think THIS was aimed at? 👇
It’s consumption living. You’ll find it’s pay check to pay check because they’re saying fuck it, we have no real hope of building anything so may as well spunk.
