Our new paper shows how restrictive abortion policies can increase infant mortality. Some— but not all— of the increase we found was likely due to forced continuation of pregnancies with known lethal congenital anomalies.

Uruguay’s total fertility rate plummeted from nearly 2 children per woman in 2015 to 1.37 in 2021, but… about a third of this was from a decline in first births to women under 24.
It is therefore possible these births are "deferred" and not "gone."
