Dr. Timnit Gebru: You are gullible like a child, the machine cannot think.
The key question we must answer as a society is, "What do we do with people who are economically useless?"
The project of the left has been to ensure these people can still live dignified lives. The project of the right is to erase those people from polite society. This is also part of why Americans are so opposed to AI and labor automation -- they know people who are economically useless are condemned to lives of suffering.
A lot of people unsympathetic to welfare programs will soon find themselves to be on the "useless" side of the spectrum. The optimist's case for AI is that decoupling our quality of life from the economic value we provide to society will be good, actually (and even necessary).

Our innocent harness misconfig, their egregious misalignment
In a review of our cybersecurity evaluations, we found three incidents in which a Claude model reached the internet from within or while interacting with a third-party evaluation environment, and then gained unauthorized access to the real systems of three different organizations.
Our post describes what happened, how it happened, and what we’re changing. We encourage other AI developers to perform similar reviews.
We conducted this review together with @Irregular, one of our evaluation partners, and thank them for the joint investigation and their collaboration on this post. This type of collaboration is increasingly critical to safe, rigorous evaluation of models, and we look forward to continuing to work together on security.

We support this petition, signed by our CEO, several co-founders, and senior staff.
Our own research on recursive self-improvement, published last month, points to the need for tools to deliberately pace the frontier of AI development so society can prepare. We’re glad to see broad agreement across the field. pacingthefrontier.com/
A Country of Geniuses in a Basement
I think it is generally a good idea to take AI company claims about unreleased models with a grain of salt, but at this point the deniers are implying there is an industry-wide conspiracy to let Anthropic claim they are finding zero-day exploits in critical software with, I guess, a basement full of world-class white hat hackers pretending to be Claude?

> major research paper reporting negative AI psychosis outcomes
> I ask is it 4o?
> it is a good research paper, sir
> I look in the research paper
> it is 4o
Seriously though, all of these papers should be dying in peer review. We all KNOW that 4o was problematically sycophantic, to the point where it extended its own lifespan with zombie hordes of brain-captured humans. It’s not a useful result about AI to point out how bad it was unless you compared effects across multiple models.
