On Morocco, Russia, and Western Sahara:
Russia no longer has the strategic foothold in Syria that it once enjoyed, its old friend Gaddafi is long gone, and the fallout from Wagner has complicated Moscow's ability to pursue a coherent strategy across Africa. So yes, of course that keeping the Western Sahara conflict alive serves a larger Russian objective of obstructing U.S. influence and preventing the emergence of stronger regional partnerships that could challenge Moscow's interests.
More importantly, the Russians have also failed to appreciate how much Morocco's position has changed. The kingdom isn't simply an American ally in North Africa anymore. Morocco has become a major economic and financial power in West Africa, with Moroccan banks controlling nearly 30% of the West African banking market, and Moroccan investments spanning telecommunications, fertilizers, infrastructure, and industry. The proposed $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline, stretching approximately 6,900 kilometers across 13 countries, could further transform the kingdom's strategic importance by connecting West African energy markets to Europe, which will inevitably make Russian gas irrelevant.
It's safe to say that Moscow has certainly noticed this transformation, which explains why Russian diplomatic rhetoric has become increasingly accommodating toward Rabat (as I pointed out in their draft). But the underlying calculation hasn't changed since Russia still treats an abstention, rather than a favorable vote, as a diplomatic concession for which Morocco should offer something in return. That approach may have worked when Moscow enjoyed greater leverage, but Morocco's growing strategic weight has fundamentally changed the equation.
By vetoing today's resolution, Moscow apparently believed it could reaffirm its commitment to Algeria, one of its principal regional partners, while preserving its ability to bargain with Morocco. But the Russians have misread the room. Rabat now has much less reason to believe that engagement with Moscow produces meaningful diplomatic returns.
In many ways, this could be a blessing in disguise for Morocco, exposing Russia's priorities and giving Rabat every reason to deepen its alignment with Washington and Europe. Putin is accelerating the very Western alignment he wanted prevent.

The majority of the original Muslim world is now uniting under one flag — Israel’s 🇮🇱
What a miracle.
A new era of peace is descending.
World oil, gas & fertiliser supplies are secure. With Iranian terror networks decimated, Hormuz war-risk insurance premiums will vanish, sending oil prices lower in the long run and ending British imperial dominance in global insurance.
Russia’s endless Ukraine war loses its funding as Moscow’s oil revenue collapses.
Decades of China’s cheap Iranian oil discount? Over.
The world just got safer. 🌍✨

Musings of the Day, 7/16/25:
The Admin is following the Economic Statecraft goals of isolating China and creating the conditions for autarky for the US and whoever else wants access to the US Consumer.
These Trade Deals cannot and should not be viewed in isolation. They are about forcing the world to choose between US and China trade regimes.
US Economic Statecraft is about defending the economic interests of the US and its allies against aggressive Industrial Policies from China that ultimately de-industrialize the economies of its trade partners.
Globalization that is not based on Comparative Advantage was never sustainable, and the US Consumer has been the largest absorber of these imbalances for decades.
Choose your alignment wisely, because the wrong choice will mean de-industrialization of your economy by way of China’s Runaway Assembly Line.
The left excerpt is from today’s NYT talking about the recent Indonesia deal terms aimed at closing transshipment loopholes — exactly what I’ve been calling for since the beginning of the Tariff Wars. Indonesia and Vietnam chose wisely by aligning with the US.
The right excerpt is from a Canadian publication that largely echoes Carney’s mindset as well as the EU’s. Canada and the EU would not be choosing wisely if they went down this path. It would be akin to letting the fox into the henhouse.
Musings of the Day, 4/30/25:
I’ve been warning about the “Frying Pan Into Fire” risk of US companies moving their Supply Chains out of China and into neighboring SE Asian countries.
Be careful who you choose, because if they are China-aligned countries, you might find yourself shut out a second time.
Regardless of Transshipment Loopholes getting closed or other Trade Barriers getting erected, I believe Trump 2.0 is serious about closing off the Escape Valves for Chinese goods — especially in Critical Path Industries.
This article highlights Vietnam as a risk, although based on my talks with folks, I’d be even more concerned about Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Remember the ultimate Economic Statecraft goal:
Re-Shore Industrial Capacity back to the US, and right now, moving your Supply Chains anywhere else entails Risk.

Boom. That’s the sound of a controlled demolition. The only question is which boom matters to you most: the boom sound from the demolition of old institutions and structures, or the tokenization boom that will arise from the destruction of these zombie assets? Don’t be a zombie and fail to see what’s coming once the zombie assets from the GFC are cleaned up - a dollarized and growing world economy.
