If you're administering a loved one's estate, you need to find out if the person had life insurance. Start with NAIC's Policy Locator Service to run national query. If in NC use "locate lost policy" tool at NCDOI.

It's the minimum amount a surviving spouse can inherit from a deceased spouse in NC. Even if the Will disinherits the spouse (not too uncommon in blended families or in gray marriages), the spouse can ask for the elective share and get 15-50% of the assets.

One of the most common misconceptions about Wills is that they allow you to avoid probate.

Since Aretha Franklin's death, FOUR different Wills have been filed at Court. The lack of clarity as to her true intent has led to family in-fighting, lawsuits, & extensive legal fees. Here's the lesson: don't keep old versions of your Will. It only leads to confusion.#EstateFail

Did you know that trusts for pets are legal in all 50 states? We're not saying your pet needs a trust to be taken care of, but it's an option! (5/6) #NationalCatDay #EstatePlanning #petcare

Four-pawed loved ones are still loved ones. If it sounds crazy to think about writing a will or trust for the sake of your pet, we encourage you to think of it as a kindness, and not an eccentric indulgence. #NationalCatDay
