Ugh, I hate that this October heat wave keeps @baynature's latest reporting on how animals deal with heat so timely. But they are fascinating stories, so find some A/C and check them out 🧵

HOW INTERESTING that the journalism nonprofit gets de-funded by its foundation backer a few months after said foundation launches its own public relations quarterly.
Well, it's official: @hakaimagazine is ceasing publication at the end of the year because our funding is being cut. I'm incredibly sad for my colleagues, for the freelance community, for the journalism ecosystem as a whole, and for myself. Editing for Hakai has been a dream.

As someone who has put in time in the mines of foundation-funded journalism, rare is the moneybags who does not tire of funding well-reported journalism that people actually want to read, in favor of a media product designed to flatter themselves and all of their little ideas.

Which is understandable, since most foundations reach a phase (as this one seems to have) of now having to raise more money from new sources to perpetuate themselves. The temptation to ditch journalism for PR is pretty tough to resist.

And bashing outsiders is, of course, a way to hinder internationalism—to stymie attempts to unify people and workers of all races and backgrounds across national lines.

Historically, solidarity has been sabotaged through separation & segregation; by setting people apart from each other, dividing & conquering. A lack of regular social contact across difference inhibits solidarity: physical separation abets psychological separation.

A 🧵about the “outside agitator" trope, inspired by our book SOLIDARITY, which looks at why “outsiders” are so threatening & so vital. Outside support matters to movements. Not everyone denounced as an outside agitator is an outsider. But outside agitators are good, actually.

Reporters on the ground with community connections provide the most meaningful and useful journalism. That's true on college campuses, and that's true in towns and cities across the country. Keep all eyes on student journalists and invest in local news.

Very jazzed—@baynature is hiring a Community Affairs Reporter! It's a paid yearlong fellowship for early-career journos with 2-3 years' experience. The beat is community reporting, heavy on #environmentaljustice. #journalismjobs Apply here airtable.com/appUTtRgoCrTsSp…

When the Xerces blue vanished in the 1940s, it was the first documented extinction of an insect in North America due to human activity. Now it's back... But it's complicated. Many thanks to @BayNature and @meownderthal for this adventure. baynature.org/2024/04/15/the…

I wrote about grassroots efforts to ban/lower the use of anticoagulant rodenticides years ago, when political activism was my beat. Still fascinating to me how difficult it is to ban any product on at a local level...grist.org/cities/rats-and-ra…

How it started: @meownderthal asked me to write about California's first state park in 15 years. How it's going: A months-long obsession with missing riparian forests and a multi-generational crew of "fight the power" basket-weavers is now this story: baynature.org/article/after-…

I have been informed that this is @BayNature's first lede that involves child lookouts and hiding from the watchful eye of park rangers.

Do not miss the gorgeous map of the murdered riparian forests of the Central Valley, created and fact-checked by @meownderthal working waaaay beyond the confines of her job description, from data that was first collected by @ChicoState's geography department.
