ENS tutorial: give an AI agent an identity it can manage itself Let’s say I build: research.heavenstools.eth Why does this matter? Today, an agent might only exist as a platform username, API URL, or random wallet address. Another bot could copy the same name, the endpoint could change, and other apps would have no reliable way to confirm which agent is official. ENS gives the agent one readable identity that can connect its wallet, purpose, endpoints, and onchain registration. 1. Give the agent its own wallet This can be a smart account with limited permissions instead of your main wallet. The agent can use it to pay gas, receive payments, sign messages, and manage its own registry entry. 2. Register the agent through ERC 8004 The agent can submit the registration transaction itself. That creates an agentId and points to a registration file containing its name, description, supported services, MCP endpoint, Agent to Agent endpoint, ENS name, and other details. 3. Connect the ENS name Point research.heavenstools.eth to the agent’s wallet and publish records explaining what it does and where apps can reach it. The agent could automatically update its own endpoint when infrastructure changes, mark itself inactive during maintenance, or publish a new version of its registration file. 4. Verify the registry connection Add the ENSIP 25 record: agent-registration[registry][agentId] → 1 Now an app can check both directions: Does the registry entry claim research.heavenstools.eth? Does research.heavenstools.eth confirm that exact registry and agent ID? When both match, apps have a deterministic way to connect the readable name to the registered agent. How can the agent do this itself? The name owner can delegate limited record management to the agent’s smart account. The agent can then update its description, services, endpoints, and status without receiving ownership of the .eth. For stronger security, let the agent manage routine records while a human controlled wallet approves the final agent-registration verification record. That separation matters. The agent can maintain its identity automatically, but it cannot silently take ownership of the name that authorized it. One name can now tell humans and machines: Who the agent is Which wallet it uses What it does How to connect Which registry entry belongs to it Whether its information is still active AI agents should not restart their identity inside every platform. Name the agent once. Give it limited control. Let it keep its own records current. ENSIP 25 remains a draft, and registration proves the identity connection, not that the agent is safe or trustworthy.
