ALT Please see a shortened version of the statement made by Calum Miller: I'm disappointed that the new Labour Government announced reopening and expanding Campsfield House. This facility, with a dark past, was closed in 2018 after years of local campaigning. Fixing the broken immigration and asylum system needs thoughtful action, not a mid-summer press release without Parliamentary scrutiny. Announcing this during Parliament's recess, after awarding the contract during the General Election, lacks transparency. I wrote to the Home Secretary on 17th July to pause the work but got no response. It's alarming that reopening Campsfield is one of this Government's first actions, especially without local consultation. The reopening is opposed by the local community, councils, and my predecessor, Layla Moran. I'll continue to work with those against this decision.
