Hi! Apologies, just got out of an event.
This is entirely being driven by USGC (quality) issues rather than anything WCan egress related (see transportation proxy on chart).
I think shipping costs explain some of it, but imho this is also a refining strain story, with HSFO cracks getting crushed and dragging not just WCS but all heavier grades down with it.
Venezuela is part of the structural weakening (more competition) but doesn't explain this latest leg lower; same with the renewed SPR release, it could weaken diffs a bit but nothing like this.
Market looking very similar to the crush in heavy diffs we experienced in late-22/early-23, which was then also driven by refinery overstretch globally and a collapse in HSFO cracks.
Would be curious to hear what you think, Joe!
It was an all time fall day in the Calgary area today!
Lots of tailwinds in the WCSB right now, things trending up.

Alberta is not going to leave $10 trillion dollars in the ground. Not a chance.
The west coast oil pipeline will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, generate hundreds of billions for roads, schools and hospitals, and keep our taxes amongst the lowest in the developed world. Here’s how 👇
Please share this with those who have questions about Alberta’s plan to build the new west coast pipeline.
Put it on the chart @Rory_Johnston !!

Although it was shortly lived, during the summer of 1981, Dome Petroleum was Canada's most valuable public company.
CEO "Smiling" Jack Gallagher was an oil permabull who almost exclusively used debt to build up Dome over the years. In the 1970s, Jack grew Dome's assets each year by an average of more than 40%. He built what was, at its peak, Canada's third largest oil producer and second largest gas producer.
Whereas other majors were engaging in downstream refining, Jack wanted supply growth for Dome. Part of this was to come from the Arctic Sea.
Dome was the first company to drill an exploratory well in the extreme Arctic and were pioneers in exploring the Beaufort Sea. Truly historical wildcatting. Jack viewed Dome's Arctic campaign as so important that Dome acquired North America's older shipbuilder in the back half of 1981 to streamline their operation.
Jack's Arctic dreams were expensive. Falling oil prices and other expensive acquisitions caused Dome's share price to collapse a year later in 1982. Dome stock would never recover. The company would go on to be taken over by Amoco Petroleum in 1988.

Jack's run at Dome reminds us to dream big and swing for the fences.
